I do not watch horror movies because the entire premise behind the film is murder as entertainment. Now I do watch action type movies where someone probably will get killed. But the story itself is not about murder. Hypocritical? I do not think so, but I am sure others may disagree.

How we were brought up has a very good connections with why we afraid when watching horror movie.
Generally, most people when they are kids were told by the olders about scary things. Some also experience being feared off. Imagination at kids stage is very high making the brain process all about the scary things.
So, when they get older, they tend to get scared because their brain have the memory of the scary things.
Some might able to get out from this situation.
Have a nice day!

I think one reason is we do something guilty. Perhaps we are afraid of having the bad karma. So we feel scared when we watch it. And watching horror movies will be exciting.

I sometimes watch horror films out of pure curiosity. I don't really get scared. It just sometimes makes me cringe when the yucky, fleshy, bloody thingy parts come on screen, I have to look away. The worst part is that the images stick with me like parasites for a whole week. When I close my eyes as I retire to bed, they flash and float before me, making me swear not to watch anymore horror films the rest of my life. After a week, the images are completely gone. I pass by the DVD store and, hey, they got a new horror movie on display!
Nowadays, I keep in mind something I read somewhere advising us never to watch horror films, or even the evening news as they debase our subconscious and the other unknown parts of our minds.
