Every had a small banking error? How about a $2000 typo?

I sent in a check to my credit card company through my credit union's online bill payment service. I also get emailed announcements if the balance in my checking account drops below $1000. So, I check my email and I see my balance lower than expected. I look (online again) at my bank statement. I see that I made a $6051.38 payment and that $8051.28 was removed from the checking account. Apparently, it is possible for there to be a typo. I'm not sure how this works. See, I typed.. electronically.. 6,051.35. So, in order for there to be a typo, someone at the Credit Union has to be manually re-typing numbers that I've entered. The check which was sent to the Credit Card company was for 6,051.35. The debit from my checking account was $2000 higher. So.. how do they send the right payment to the credit card company but take the wrong amount out of my account and not notice some phantom error of $2000 on their books? Well, I guess the wisdom here is to trust no one. Any similar stories from your end?

I have never had anything like that happen to me before. I hope you got on the phone with the bank and got is straightened out right away. Especially if you are going to have to have access to that money in the very near future.

Fortunately, they did straighten it out for me. It took a couple of hours, but it is fixed, now.

That happened one with a check of mine sent to pay a credit card they added a extra 0 to the end of it. Afterwards i made sure i put a big old point in the amount box. On the other end of the spectrum i went into my account one morning online to find an extra 30,000 dollars. Apparently the bank had done some training earlier that morning and one of the computers wasn't in the training mode. I called and informed them promptly after day dreaming for a minute on how i could withdraw the money and not get caught! LOL

Yes.. I think they would have quickly caught on in a few days. Very tight with their own money, I'm sure.

Good thing you were paying attention. Some people may not have caught that for a while. And then problems can sprout up. Nothing like that has happened to me. But my hubby did have this sort of thing happen to him. Thankfully at this point, only once.
