Do you check to see if there are other discussions similar to yours before...

posting? I just found out that there were two similar postings of my last discussion. I found out, of course, AFTER I posted mine. I suppose that I could search some tags to look for similar discussions BEFORE I post. I think that maybe there are other ways to figure this out too. What do you do? How do you go about researching for similar posts?

Yes, it is important, in order to chose a popular topic.

That's true. I hadn't thought of it that way. I was mainly concerned that I would be repeating someone else's discussion. What you are saying makes sense. I could do something similar but not exactly the same. Good point. Thanks:)

This is a copy of my response I gave to a discussion similar to this one!! http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/1819498.aspx I do not always check to see if a similar or identical discussion has been started as it is often not to get the right answer. Not everyone uses the same tags or titles for similar discussions therefore you will not know if one has been posted. Not everyone is asking about the same point to be discussed. The similar discussion could have been posted weeks or months before and therefore is new to many users. The longer you are a member of myLot the more you see see the same discussion topics being posted by different people. With the amount of users on this site it is almost impossible to have the only thought on a particular topic. IMO the only time I would get upset is if someone had copied my discussion word for word then that is cheating.

Hello, rocketj. I believe that there was already a discussion almost exactly as this one. The same subject, in general. And I said that no, I don't check any discussion to see if I am posting a double content. I am constantly on myLot, and, if I have never read about the subject, then I create a discussion. There are high chances that the older discussions (two years ago, or more) would have the same subject, but they are already too old and people here are different than two years before. This means you will get different opinion and different points of view for the same discussion. Respectfully, Munhozmib.

No I don't but I do look at other people's posts a lot and I don't post something that I know I have seen recently.

that is what i mostly do, i think the search thing is pretty bad, i mean you can type in exact phrases and something totally different will appear.

Yeah, I always do. Which is why I only started a handful of discussions. The search engine has a small flaw though, it seems it will only show results that are under your interests. So there's always the possibility that someone started the same discussion under an interest that is similar but you don't have selected. Rich

luvandpower, It IS boring selecting interests! The easiest way I have added more is by selecting it at the end of one of my friends discussions. When I get an e-mail notice and answer my friends discussion, I will be asked if I want to add such and such as an interest. I almost always say yes unless it is something really bizarre. My list has grown quickly because of this.

likewise rocket... did you know there is an interest for steak? i mean isn't that just out there? they have one for food/ cooking /eating that should be enough. they probably have one for eggnog lol.

No honestly I don't. I used to in the past. There are so many users and so many discussions that it is impobbile to verify whether a similar discussion already exists or not.

I used to all the time. I think I read it in the guidelines or maybe from a mylot member's post. Just that we should put in a few tags to see if we find something similar. I hardly do it anymore, but I suppose I ought to.

Yes most of the time I do. I sometimes forget to do a search first but luckily I still haven't seen any similar posts. I guess at least 2-3 discussions that I started are similar but not entirely. I try to search the main keywords in my discussion however sometimes even if I try to do a search I won't find anything then the similar posts that I'm expecting to find will only appear AFTER I post it.

actually no :) i just look for the interest and then post a new topic or discussion only to find out after that there has been a similar (and sometimes even the same) discussion. i think i should do a quick search next time ;p

Hi there rocketj1 I really wouldn't worry about it because the people that reach your discussion will probably not be the same people that reached the other one. I can honestly say that I don't check to see if someone has started a similar discussion as I think it would take forever to double check. I would never copy someone elses discussion so if I did start a discussion the same as someone elses they would see that I hadn't done it on purpose!

Yes! I always check befre I start them but sometimes before we post them up we do not see the similar ones because people do not tag their discussions and this is why this happens quite alot. We only see the similar ones after we have started them which is not fair. I recommend everyone to tag their discussions so this does not happen. Take care rocketj1

So, you generally check this out by doing a tag search?
@hildas (3031)
8 Dec 08
No. Why can you do a tag search? Sorry no. Sometimes you will not see a similar discussion if you look for it as it is not tagged. But then you come across one by chance. Sorry rocket I am useless at explaining these sort of things.

Yea, I think some members don't put a tag then sometimes we post almost similar postings. It is only we've posted, we find that there is exactly the same discussion already posted earlier. I've no clue about any other way of finding out about similar post, I'll watch this discussion, maybe we come to know from any other member.

Hello rocketj1! Honestly, I don't know how to check whether the discussion I am about to start have similar discussion. I just decided whether to post it or not when I am sure that I never encountered the discussion that popped out on my mind before.

I've never thought of looking for similar discussions before posting. That would take a great deal of time to do. I would not have thought that others had similar discussions as to me - yours are always original. As you are aware , I don't make many postings but the thing that I have a small issue with is that I try to respond to 90% of friend's discussions - if they are of interest to me and yet many of my friends (not you rocket) do not respond to mine. It is not good manners. Blessings !
