So here I am up and awake after I tried to lay in bed and go to sleep. I just finished three nightshifts in a row at work this morning. Usually I will stay up all day and evening until it's bedtime again or just sleep a couple of hours in the morning, then I'm feeling ill on Tuesdays. I'm really torn between those feelings and well.. now not being able to get to sleep because of this all.
Just recently I've managed to work some evening shifts so I can get home in time to go to bed around midnight.
I don't work days because it just doesn't fit my lifestyle at home.
Have you worked nightshifts? What kinds of things did you do to get your sleeping pattern back on track?

I find when I work an evening shift I have to unwhind after one and that takes a couple of hours to do so.

I find that if I am not in bed by at least 10 o'clock I can't get up in the morning. I feel good if I am sleeping by nine at night for the next day. It's worse the following day if I stay up after working a nightshift say on sunday is my last nightshift, and I stay up on monday just to try get back on track then Tuesday is nasty for me.

I can certainly identify with your problem. When I was younger It didn't bother me to work different shifts. I needed very little sleep so it didn't bother me to change shifts. Now that I've gotten older my body is not so resilient.
Like you working mornings just doesn't fit in with the other things I've got going in my life so I usually opt for the graveyard shift. The last actual job I had was doing fine until my boss decided she wanted to give a newcomer my shift and make me work swing.
I told her that I was to old for all that. That I would work any shift she wanted but it had to be the same shift every day because my body had to know when it was supposed to sleep. She wouldn't compromise and it was a deal breaker for me so we parted company.

I was on track for awhile until the last month when we ran into financial problems so I had to pick up some other shifts. My supervisor has me on three nights on every second weekend then the following thursday so there's a gap there that make it hard for that thursday to work. Then I'm usually off for about a week. So basically I will sleep at night until that weekend comes up.
I need to find other work that isn't shiftwork so I can get my body adjusted to sleeping at night. I am to getting older and I don't think I can handle it anymore.

Tonight will be much easier to fall asleep because I'm up early today. It took me a long time to fall asleep last night because of those nightshifts. Now I'll get back on track until thursday night when I have to work again for nights. Go figure lol.
