My computer must be having a melt down

My computer must be having a melt down or something because it's soooo very slow tonight. This is the very first time it's done this. Usually I turn to an answer such as there are too many members on a site. If that were true in my case then all the sites I've visited tonight are overloaded. (I don't think so )
I've already cleaned out my files and am going to defrag my computer tonight and see if that makes a difference tomorrow. Perhaps there is another program running and that's what is causing it? Maybe a virus? Who knows!
What do you do when your computer is running slow?

There are lots of circumstance why a system comes to a halt or really slow.
consider your defragmented files. before installing program be sure your actually needed it cause after uninstalling it., your Hard Drive causes traffic.
Also a background scan of your antivirus really affect the performance response or your system. maybe your using AVG Free Edition anti virus because its background scan can cause slow down of performance. if you have source for anti virus that uses less resources can really help improving the response of your system.
The last is that always make a point to Update your antivirus to fully protect your computer. even though you have anti virus sometime a good virus bypass that security check and try disabling some security of your computer and start corrupting files to steal information on how you use your computer and for some confidential files.
Just a regular maintenance will do the Job. and if you can try to prevent formating your hard drive can also increase the life of your Drive for longer use and performance

I've pretty much tried cleaning out the temp files, doing a disk clean up and defragment last night then today I removed a lot of programs in the control panel under programs. After I tried this the restart recovery came up asking me if I wanted to restore it to an earlier date so it just re-added the programs I just deleted. Sometimes startup repair comes up and I think after that it's going to run better but it doesn't. Every week usually on monday nights I will let my computer run through a defrag to keep up maintanance. I'm guessing my son did something on here.
Thanks for your help

New generation Virus are so Intelligent it actually prevents the user from getting near them by means of closing them or terminating. Like your Problem maybe it accidentally remove and the virus script instruct the computer to install by reverting the System restore.

after defragging and cleaning your files and your computer is still slow. there is something that is always missed by most of the computer owner when it comes to computer performance. HEAT. make sure that your fans are working properly. if one of your fan stops working, then it will definitely cause heat buildup making your computer performance slow. try feeling the sides of your computer if you don't know how to open it. if you feel any heat building up which is unusual, maybe one of your fan stopped working. hope that will help.

hey, i think i know. if you have a torrent client downloading for example bit comet, try disabling this download. after a few minutes try surfing the net again. lately, ive been having problems with the new version of bit comet, other torents specially from pirate bay makes my browser surf the internet very slow. even if im on a local server which i do when making website. anyway, if this doesn't work, it must be your internet connection. if your hooked up to a phone line, try to listen is there's noise. if there is, then thats the problem, report that to your internet provider. other than that, i don't think it's your hardware or anything. don't screw up with the hardware unless your sure it's the software.

I use bittorrent but it's not running unless I'm using it to download or seeding after it's finished. I have seen piratebay but I much prefer mininova. When it's done seeding I will delete them all. Could it be this bit torrent that has done this?
Thanks again for your help

nixxi76:
not sure what your issue could be. computers are complicated machines lol.
could be low disk space causing it. bad memory, low memory. software corruption. the only real way to get it working again and sure not to miss anything.
format your computers hard drive and reinstall the operating system (windows). will make it as if the computer is brand new again. basically.. lol
just dont forget to back up your files and programs on an external drive.

I recommend:
Following the steps I wrote about on here if you have XP:
http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/1046777.aspx
It saves some on your memory.
You can install CCleaner (ccleaner.com), you can download and clear many files from your computer.
You can defrag, you can run "disk clean up" as well. You can install Spybot - Search and Destroy as well to search for spyware.
These steps should (hopefully) make your computer run faster.

I usually try to check if it's my pc or my internet connection. If it's my pc I usually do system check including anti-virus check using my anti-virus program and an online program to double check. Then I try to see if the hard disk spaces are too full, try to delete unnecessary files. Do some back up in case something is truly wrong. Then if I can't do anything about it, ask for help to those who knows how.

hiii.dude.........i came to know through this discussion that ur computer is very slow and ur going to defrag the computer................to night,,.........
and see the mistakes..........and make a difference.......
i am here to explain clearly that ur syste may be with full full of virusee
so i sugest you not to have any ........programmes dowloading directly from the net.ot from .the pen drives.donot use any usb devices...with out having any anti virus......
so first cleanup ur system virus.and automatically format it once by taking ut necessary files.so that ur system comes faster,,and u can easily get access over to your work....
all the best

Try downloading and opening CPUz on your computer to see if your Processor is running at its normal speed. You can also check if your RAMS are still operational. If necessary, run virus scan and check out if there are any resource hogging programs running (see task manager). If all does not work then run Msconfig.exe and perform a diagnostic start-up. Uncheck all third-party programs and try clear it one at a time. It is a tedious procedure but it sometimes works.

I am having similiar issues with my computer right now. I am getting a bunch of pop ups and the typing is even slow. I already ran a system scan and it didn't find much. Even after it cleaned out the little it found, the system is still going slow. I am out of options.

I had that problem before as well. I called HP and asked them what to do. The girl told me to open up my start menu and type in the search menu MALAWARE and what do you know... that came up. At first I was quite suprised and curious about what MALAWARE was until she explained to me that it was a bad virus where I would have to do a system recovery on my computer. I had to delete everything and I lost all my pictures and music. I asked her if I could put my pictures on a disk and she told me that if I went to install them when my computer got cleaned, it would put MALAWARE back into my computer.
So maybe check your computer for that.
Good luck and thanks for your help

To be honest: I don't really know how I feel about this. I think I want to read a few more other responses before posting my own.

i think the first reply is correct. you could restart your system. it could be your internet connection that's why your slowing down. try turning off your modem or hub then turn it on again, restart whatever browser your using then try surfing the web again.

Have you tried restarting it? If not, you might be right about another program eating up all the resources in the background. Try checking your task manager. Maybe you can find the program and close it.
(Ctrl+Shift+Esc or Ctrl+Alt+Del to open the task manager)
