How much are your purchases influenced by the advertisments you see on televisio

Usually, during the advertisements people get up and do various things, like use the bathroom, get snacks, switch the laundry from the washer to the dryer...I am wondering how many of you actually view the ads, and which ads really catch your eye. Do they really influence you to buy the product? Or are you influenced by other people such as friends,family, children etc. I am taking an advertising class in college next semester and this question is kind of a pre-curser to the class.
