Oh I love experimenting! I also enjoy trying out different mixtures of spices on things as well.

The first time i experimented, i made "friends" with different kinds of spices first. I read different books and researched them in the internet. I think watching the "lifestyle channel" really helped. Watching the experts do it made me confident to do the recipe all be myself.

I will sometimes modify recipes a bit, but not alot. I find that when I veer too much from a particular recipe they tend not to turn out. I think that the recipes are generally better when you follow them pretty close to as is. However, it is good to be creative when possible, because that is how recipes are invented and created.

modifying recipes is a great way to start an adventurous path in the cooking world. Hope you continue doing it and please don't forget to share your great recipes once you perfected it!

A lot of time I add or take away something from a recipe, I add something that I like rather than what the recipe calls for. Or I change an ingredient, most of the time it comes out great, but I have done this and thinking that this or that would be good, when it is added to the other ingredients, it totally spoils the whole recipe. I guess that is how we learn.

The greatest teacher is experience so don't let your heart sink if your cooking turns out bad at first, anyway you can always try improving it again! I was always "palpak" (filipino word for "failure") at first, but then I try to figure out what went wrong and try to correct it again next time around.

I am really not a very good cook and my husband is a picky eater so I really don't try new recipes very often. Once in awhile I will try a new one. I found one my kids like called a cowboy dinner made with spaghetti noodles, corn and melted cheese though it is really good.

creating a new dish is very exciting indeed! It really gives me some surge of adrenaline and if it turns out great, i really feel some accomplishment. But if you really want to be in the safe side, why not try kitchen tested recipes.

Recipe books, seldom. Mostly by taste buds :)
The basics of cooking is there.. Although I do admit, when it comes to western food, I tend to look it up first(I'm chinese)... Locally here, western herbs can be expensive... Not to mention hard to find...
Still, so far, all my cooking adventures has not resulted in any disaster(that I couldn't tweak it and save it) ... Hope it stays that way!

yeah you are absolutely right. You just have to learn the principles of cooking and be on your own from there. I think cooking is a lot easier than baking which calls for an accurate measurement of ingredients or else yourcake will not rise!

I love to experiment and come up with new dishes to make. Mostly they all turn out great and I am happy that I did it. I almost never go by a recipe book or anything else.
