Has anyone ever accepted a certified check for Items that they are selling?

I was offered a certified check from the bank and it is on its way. does anyone know how I find out if it is real before I cash it? I dont want to get screwed by my bank or any other bank. I am just wondering because I sold an Item to someone and I do not send out the product till I have payment. any advice would be great.
