May Cause Drowsiness...

Thankfully I don’t have to take any medications. I try to avoid taking them b/c of side affects and long term problems that can come from taking some. One of the most common side affects I see on just about every medication, whether over the counter or prescription, is drowsiness. Some might as well say “Take this and pass out” on the label. Because of this I know a lot of ppl that are supposed to take medications and don’t b/c they don’t want to be drowsy or half-asleep all day long. Some of these medications are for serious conditions…depression, high blood pressure, diabetes, etc. And yet ppl won’t take them.
Years ago I had an abscessed tooth and had to go to the ER…they gave me a shot in the butt and told me I might be sleepy. I was out for the rest of the day and part of the next day.
Do you avoid taking necessary medication b/c it may make you sleepy? Do you take it anyways and hope for the best? What’s the longest a medicine has knocked you out for?
[b]MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

Well, I have never got knock out from a med. as I take med everyday for epilepsy and that med. can make you drowsy. I have been taking that med since I was 12 and now pain pills don't make me sleepy. I stay up as a matter of fact and get kind of silly. Then now I get the pain in the stomach. So I now will suffer before I take anymore pain meds. But I take the pills if they don't give me more pain later. So no I don't avoid taking it. If it is a new med for me. I take it first on the weekend or I start after my working hours and I'm not going to be driving. You have to be responsible about taking your medications as it just as much your responiblity as your Dr.'s. It's just like drinking same affect. Your friend onlydia. Have a wonderful Christmas

Well I'm on a lot of medication, and they don't ever make me sleepy or anything. I don't have any side effects from them, probably because I've been on them so long that it doesn't affect me that way anymore. I know what you mean about them causing drowsiness, its almost all cold medicine that does it, I make sure I buy the Non-drowsy kind, but there are some ppl that even the non drowsy kind puts to sleep, I have a friend like that, he said it doesn't matter what it says, it always knocks him out. I try to take medication that won't make me sleepy, last year, I was having alot of back pain, and they gave me some pain medicine as well as muscle relaxers, I tried to only take them when I was going to bed, but one day I was in so much pain I had no choice, and I think I slept the whole day on the couch. I would wake up once in awhile, but I felt really weird, and I'd go back to sleep, I think I finally woke up after my husband got home, but I was sure groggy. I tried not to do that again, and I noticed that if took them when I went to bed, I would have weird dreams all night, and not sleep very good. I don't take them anymore.

No, I don't avoid medicines that make me sleepy. As I have a problem falling asleep to begin with. 4 of my medicines cause drowsiness. (One is a sleep aid). I have no idea why I have trouble falling aasleep. Neither can my doctors.

I'd just take it anyway, it must be doing some good. I'm one of these people who doesn't like taking any meds and hates going to the doctors, but if I was very bad then there's no choice

I do avoid medicines that cause drowsiness but only because I have small children to take care of. I took benadryl once and slept for nearly 48 hours. I never took it agian.

medication has never knocked me out but this is a great topic,
I take all kinds of pills being should not be playing with serious medication by not taking them for that reason some medication are meant to save their life and the side affects becomes of lesser importance then.

It would be a rare occasion when I took any sort of medication. Basically we have a very healthy diet and growing all our own organic fruit and vegetables means we are not having any of those chemicals that are used on most produce. At least there are none used on our small farmlet.
My partner uses a lot of herbs in the cooking and they too are all organically grown by us. I think a lot of the reasons people get sick these days and need to resort to prescription, or over the counter, medication is because there is so much chemicals, herbicies and pesticides in our systems. That comes from the food that we eat and even though we might wash the otside of say a tomato, whatever is used in the growing period does end up being part of the tomato.
Some people do need medication though for conditions like depression. Often that depression does not disappear without some sort of "help", apart from lifestyle factors that is. Once the medication has started to work, then in some people exercise and good diet can help the medication work better and more efficiently.
If a person has a medical condition which is serious enough to visit their Doctor, then I believe they should take the medication prescribed. Otherwisie why bother going to the Doctor in the first place? If a person finds that the medication does not suit them, then they should talk to their Doctor about any other options which are available.
Actually if I had to take any medications, particularly those which might make me even a little bit drowsy then I could not work. I am a truck driver and that means I have to be alert at all times when I am driving because just a microsecond lapse in concentration could mean an accident.

I see all these medicine warnings about drowsiness and I got some cold pills that said that the night ones would make me sleepy and do not operate any heavy machinery or drive a car. And guess what? The daytime one that did not cause drowsiness did for me. I think a lot of those are the worse case scenerios and for the rare person who will get drowsy. So I will take medications, but sometimes I will miss one day but that is because I have to get a specific checkup and I am supposed to miss it that day.

My whole family is like that, probably because we use herbs and things and hardly take medicines over the counter or prescription. I use garlic and garlic pills for infections. When I was depressed a few years ago I took St. Johns Wort and it did work for me. I think things like that work better too when someone isnt used to all the made medicines.

this brought to mind one of te commercials for a sleep-aid, and says it might cause drowsiness! helloooo, if you are taking a sleep-aid doesn't that mean you want to be sleepy? lol
as for your question, i have had a prescript for pain pills for 8 months, and i only take them if the pain is really bothering me and/or if i know i don't have to get up early the next morning. it says i can take 1-2 every 4 hours......but i kinda like being awake during the day, or when i drive.

I do not take anything at the moment, but long ago I was put on some anti depressant tablets because I was in a bit of a state. My doctor put me on very strong ones and everytime I took one within 15 minutes I would be zonked completely. They were a lethal dose very strong and I think that they were not the right ones for me at that time in my life in fact when I think about it they were pretty dangerous because I was not supposed to drink on them but I did and they used to make me mental!! In the end I just stopped taking them, mainly because I took two one day and slept for 48 hours.

Hello Twoey,
I'd about do backward monkey rolls to avoid taking prescription medications. However, or perhaps because -- as a teen I found myself in the unfortunate predicament of a run-in with a patch of poison Sumak. The resulting rash was so awful that our family physician prescribed Benadryl (this predated the over-the-counter dosage, so it was much more potent). As I recall, the scrip called for three tablets per day. The very first dose rendered me unconscious for 15 hours. Suffice it to say, I never partook in a second dose. Not surprisingly, I've not been real keen on prescription Rx since.

hey t68,
I got knocked out for an entire 24 hour period on a nerve pill once. I don't have insurance any more so I don't take prescription meds but nyquil gel caps help me go to sleep-I was actually hooked on them at one time-took 'em everyday but I cut that out too. Not saying that I don't still take something to help me sleep I do if needed but if a pill says will cause drowsiness I'll probably be more likely to buy ie:I look for night time type otc meds when buying something.

yes i do avoid these unless i know i have a couple of days to recover. cuz they knock you out, and then you STILL have to recover from your days of BEING knocked out, haha! unless i'm very sick, i don't like the knocked out feeling. it's hard to be that lethargic (sp?) as a mother as well! like we have time!! haha! guess we just work thru some of the pain, when we SHOULD be taking care of it, but not in taking those kind of meds! not for me anyway!

I am very sensitive to medication that makes you drowsy. In fact, something as simple as Tylenol PM will make me feel awful if I don't sleep 12-16 hours. When I had my surgery (they removed my gall bladder), I was on fairly strong pain medication for several days. In the first few days I had to follow the instructions because the pain was so bad. I slept most of the first three or four days after surgery. It was probably good for my healing, but I hate feeling doped up or sleepy from medicine.

Hi twoey68,
If the doctors give you medications for a problem and its makes you drowsey, then you should rest and if you feel sleepy so be it, so what is the point of not taking medication and suffer, I don't understand.
