Is It Ever Appropriate To Tell A Lie?

Some would say that it is never appropriate to lie. I wonder though, if a lie would be appropriate under certain circumstances; such as misleading a potential criminal when you know they are about to commit a crime? Can you think of any other occasion where a lie would be acceptable?

I lie told for the happiness of your loved one is not a lie in my opinion. It is better to lie than to say the truth that could hurt someone's sentiments.

Thanks for the good response. So you think it is alright to lie to spare someone's feelings. But what happens to the feelings of that person if he/she finds out you lied?

This has happened with me, Once I told a lie to my guy. And later he cam to know about it. He became upset at the start but when I told him the reason for telling him the lie, he was fine. It worked in my case. What had been your experience?

There are certain circumstances that we have to tell a lie. When a friend invites you to eat, you will sometimes said you're done even if you feel hungry you feel shy to eat.I always have done that lie.But lying for a criminal just to save him from the crime I can't do that because I still have my conscience.

Very good response. Thank you. I've often been guilty of that lie as well.

Under normal circumstances it is never alright to tell a lie. But if you are in danger then it is alright. Or when a wife asks her husband if she looks fat then a lie might be your best option. The biggest lies of all time are Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny. But these things instill hope in children so I think these lies are okay.

Lying is not necessarily wrong. There is a concept of Satya which means "using words for the benefit of others". Words by themselves have no real value. Say the words, I believe in God" and you don't even believe it means nothing. Cheers!!

That is the best justification for lying I have ever read. Thanks for the response. I'll keep that one in mind at all times.

ooh wow nice discussion! hmm...well let's see if someone was looking out for their best friend and lied about something in a relationship you have with someone then it may be okay. for example, if my girlfriend and i were planning on getting married, but we were keeping it secret( the friend knew) then the friend would of course lie if someone asked if we were going to get married. wow i may comment again if i can think of anything else.
