Christmas Meanings: Myths Revealed

India

hi all,its a chrismas time again, and i like to share some facts about the christmas, first of all let me say the celebration is now a days something that is entirely commercial in nature.many, have never viewed the Christmas holiday as something that was supposed to be about Jesus or any of the stories behind the Christian faiths While there are stories of the birth of Jesus and the relation to Christmas trees because of Saint Boniface, I realized that even if these myths were true{they aren’t by the way)the spirit of Christmas really has little to do with these ideas. Christmas trees are decoration and presents are material goods that do not make a person’s life better or verse Some believe that Jesus really was born on December 25 and others have looked to January 6.Others tend to look towards the spring and feel that those dates are more relevant. The Bible does not offer an actual date. and intrestingly if u look in the festivel named Winter Solstice of hallenismos u can see that in ancient calenders it was celebrated in december 25 the 25th the day of Invincible Sun, was celebrated as far back as the third century during the reign of Aurelian. In 273, the Christian Church chose the same day. Many believe that it was an attempt to Christianize the day.Whatever the reason, it was the original Winter Solstice. and in history of christians too u can clearly see the fact that From 1659-1681 the Puritans in Massachusetts made celebrating Christmas illegal. The reasons for this included the fact that the celebration was formed from Pagan” roots and therefore it was ungodly in nature. They determined this because the birth of Jesus was not written in the Bible, which meant that it was a date that was not meant to be celebrated. evergreens had been used in Ancient celebrations long before Saint Boniface came into play. In Ancient times, evergreens were used as a representation of fertility, reproduction and agriculture . During the winter celebrations, people would bring evergreens into their homes and decorate them with fruits, candles, and small metal pieces, depending on the area you were from and the celebration that you participated in. The trees were used to help honor and celebrate the Gods. so the ancients took the christmas from the hallenismos and the pagans

Celebrations and festivities are a part of our life only to add some joy, colour and positive change in our daily mundane existence. All religions are based on facts, few of which have been actually verified. Yet, we look at some days as holy and important and associate certain rituals with it, which include charity and caring for the poor and abstinence and many other aspects which, if we want it, can give us spiritual satisfaction too. Though not a Christian, I love the spirit of Christmas and here in Kolkata, the shopping areas and fun zones are so beautifully decorated and lighted, you would think you have come to a Christian country. Everybody is out to have some fun and we all really do need such occasions.

Yup there are a lot of Pagan Practices before that has been adopted into Christian traditions. This is why I don't understand how some could be very hypocritical about celebrations that are "pagan" e.g Halloween when some Christian celebrations were actually Christianized versions of those celebrations.

The Date of the birth of Christ is not so important. The important thing is that Christ was born and he created an example of a perfect, sinless life. Millions of people have invested faith in Christ and it is because of this faith that many of these people live in hope and solace. Christmas is celebrated because of the love people have for Christ. Nowadays, there are many people who say that Christ's birthday derived from Pagan roots, but I think no devout christian would feel irritated because of this. In life, faith is very important.
