I used to wonder why people often had a problem about others whistling. I assumed they were just edgy and not in the mood for it. I just noticed how irritating it is! It's so high pitched, it's just not pleasant to hear in any amount! What about you?

Hi,
I do not like hearing people whistling because I think it is a cheap, crude and rude thing to do. It is also indicative of the fact that the person or people do not have good manners and proper respect for the person they are whistling at. I hate it most when men whistle at dressed-up girls...So please do not whistle!:)

A whistle is a simple woodwind instrument which produces sound from a stream of forced air.Whistles can also produce sounds at pitches inaudible to the human ear such as dog whistles which can be heard by dogs at a range beyond that of human sensory perception.i try to whistle but it does not produce any sound but my hubby does whistle beautifully,it does not come out as a high pitched sound.

Hello Sheepie,
You just reminded me of a lady who I used to work with, she use to whistle one tune all the time. After a while it got very irritating. I used to work with her, good thing it was a part time job. I don't mind hearing it, as long as the person who is doing, knows how to whistle a tune.

I don't mind at all when they whistle for a tune.I remember my grandfather is fond of whistling while repairing his fish nets when I'm beside watching him I always fall asleep with the sound of his whistle. But i hate to hear people shouting their whistles in the middle of the street repeatedly using their hands.Just trying to catch attention.

I think it's just a matter of whistling in the proper place, like if you're in a quite place and suddenly someone whistles hard at the back, it is right to react to that, but when your in a basketball game where whistling is used as cheering for the team then you shouldn't react to that. :)

It does annoy me but when I hear an old man whistling I think it's nice. It can cheer someone up and provide a distraction from the everyday noise that we are accustomed to hearing such as traffic, the hum of air conditioning, mobile phones ringing and all other stuff. I think it's cool because you can tell they're whistling old songs that were around 50 or 60 years ago.

The problem that I have with whistling...or humming...or spontaneous singing...is that the song ends up stuck in my head for hours! I used to work with a man who would sing very old, outdated *dumb* songs...like the theme song from Gilligan's Island...and I'd find myself humming it an hour later. I also agree with you about the high pitch. My grandson could probably break a window with the pitches he reaches.

I don't mind whistling at all when it's just 'normal' whistling - however, I hate it when old lads whistle when they speak. It might be something to do with badly fitting false teeth, but some of them do this horrible whistling thing while they are speaking to you, and it's like fingernails down a blackboard! I know they can't help it, but it's horrible to listen to.
