I'm not just talking about free downloads of random tidbit programs, I'm talking more about the big open source projects, such as Firefox, or Openoffice, those big name projects that get a lot of people talking about them, and what a lot of the linux distributions choose to go with.
What other software have people found useful that's totally and completely free, and even moreso, that has source code available to tinker with. Maybe there's some more unknown gems of programs that could help a lot of people, if only they were promoted more.
I use a neat little text editor called Kate for when I'm doing my programming. It's part of KDE, a linux thing for those that are unfamiliar, and in it's simplicity, it is incredibly powerful for what I use it for, and yet I've never heard of it before I just randomly tried it.
Have you ever picked up a program just on a whim, and found it to be an awesome selection, and just had all the right features for what you wanted to do?

How beginner? I'm looking to work with some new programmers, to help teach what I know, and collaborate on some interesting projects, both for the community and to aid people in learning how to code and develop programs. If you'd like, add me and contact me, and maybe I could help you out with your learning of php/mysql.

I use a lot of open source software in both windows and Linux environment. But the one that I found most useful is Keepass Password Safe ( http://keepass.info ). Keepass is a password manager, its help you manage your password. All your password can be put into one database and its was securely encrypted. And all the password can be access using only one master password or a keyfile.
Keepass is a multi platform software, so I can use its in both Windows and Linux. I use it to store most of my password. And one of keepass features that I like is a built-in password generator. I use its to generate a secure password for my email accounts. Its a must have software if you have a lot of password to remember and have a problem to memorize all of the password.

If firefox didn't already have a built in mechanism to have a global password, and if I went to more sites than I could remember passwords for, it could be useful. I'm sure there's a lot of people out there that could find it useful, I know some in my own family, lol.
Good to know that there's software out there dedicated to this function, because I'd trust that a lot more than any browser feature or something of that scale and nature.

I've tinkered with it very little, so I don't know if what people say it's true. I'm talking about "The Gimp", it's a free alternative to Photoshop and people who know how to use it say it's just as powerful.
I found it confusing and slow, plus I own an old copy of Photoshop that is perfect for what I need, so I didn't bother much with it. Two things I'm not sure about: If there's a linux version or if it's open source.
However, since people praise it so much, maybe you should take a look at it.
