Make A Difference

This is my very first discussion (YAY!) so bear with me, please.
We live in a wold that tends to ignore the existence of other people. If a person or a situation has no impact on us as individuals, then we just don't care. It is for this reason that many of society's problems do exist. With that in mind, I ask the following question.
If, hypothetically speaking, January 1st (or any other day) was declared to be International Make A Difference Day, what would you do to make a difference in the world?
Donating money to charity doesn't count, but running a fundraiser does. If you choose fundraising, what organization would you choose and why, and what type of fundraising would you do? How would you orchestrate it?
No empty gestures allowed either. An empty gesture would be doing something that makes YOU feel good, but doesn't really do much to help the situation in the long run. For example, giving somebody a pair of shoes makes YOU feel good, but it doesn't help the person to be able to buy their own shoes in the future. Giving someone money doesn't help the person to gain a steady stream of income. They're both wonderful gestures, but they make YOU feel good without really doing much about the situation.
(For our English as a second language friends, 'hypothetical' means theoretical, or pretend. A hypothetical situation is one that doesn't really exist.)

Okay, so you would join an organization. But this is a passive type of organization. You're not really doing anything other than shopping. I'm not knocking your response as every little bit does help. But what would you DO. How would YOU make a difference?
This is meant to make people think hard about how they can make a difference in the world around them and see how people would become an active part of their world and their communities.
