Where I am from, most persons just let their dogs run free. The truth be told its now that I am seeing persons (mostly the affluent ) taking up this practice. However the damage has already been done,I find it a weird practice nevertheless. That is why I am asking you dog lovers ,what are the benefits that you get out of walking a dog, I am not seeing it ,why not let the dog run free ? Disclaimer : No dogs were ever injured by the author ,just trying to get views on this issue ............lol

I was a little confused at first as to what you were saying, but I think we are on the same wavelength. Walking a dog on a lead, yes? Since the point of walking a dog is to give it exercise, how does walking it sedately along on a lead do anything for the dog? I suppose if you live in a heavily built-up area there are safety considerations, in case the dog suddenly goes insane and bites somebody (mine apologises to his bones, for God's sake). But if you have parks or open spaces. let them run. I took mine out today to a park, where I threw a tennis ball for him half a dozen times as I crossed the park, then a short walk throuh bushland to a waterhole where I threw sticks for him and let hin swim for twenty minutes, then back to the park where I threw the ball for him another 7 or 8 times as I made my way back to the car. Result? One very happy, very tired dog. Lash

I have always seen people doing and they seem so satisfied ,I coudl never understand what they get out of it especially when you live in the country area wher its every dog for himslef. Here we just let go our dogs unless we know its a bad dog then we might chain it and even then we just fence up our yard and let them loose. Thanks for the clarification

They do it because it makes them feel that they have done the right thing. If it is a small dog then that walk will get the dog all the exercise it needs. Big dogs need to be allowed to run free which is why we have off lead parks so that dogs can get some proper exercise. Walking on a lead is an exercise in obedience and it make the owner feel good.

i think ,makiing a dog free its not a good idea ,it would be a dangerous as the dog can attack on some one ,can destroy some others property and things like that ,but taking a dog for walk with the owner is good as it get closer to u and get familiar with places ..and dog feels good ,and u got a company /walking partner ..

I used to have a dog, but just for a short period, about a month... But anyways, i think it's just allowing your dog more freedom. But still, i think this practice should only be allowed if your dog is well-trained or is well-behaved. Seriously, if the dog just isn't very sane, it'll just run amok and start biting every person it sees. That means sueing and, in my place, they put your dog to sleep :O

Letting the dog run free can be a risk not only to you and your dog but to others. Unless you have had an out of control dog I don't think others really understand. I have a lab that is so sweet to people but doesnt like other dogs to much. Not any of her fault but because she was attacked by two little dogs when she was younger so now I think she lost trust. It takes alot of easing into it to get her used to other dogs. Also there is a leash law in most states. You never know what a dog is going to do. If your dog in on a leash you have more control of the dog. It can also be exercise for the both of you. Along with being a good bonding time for mans best friend!

I am glad you didn't test your theory on any live dogs! We walk ours because we are not allowed to let the run free. Around here, people get stupid and think all dogs need to be tied up. Our dogs are very nice, have never attacked anybody but they must be locked up! We walk them so they can get fresh air and exercise. Now if I lived where they could run around I wouldn't.

Hello, ronnyb. If you let dogs run freely in the streets, they will mark territory everywhere, including in your gate. They will also do their necessities in front of your house, and we both know that if they are running free their owners might not see it. Therefore, their owners will not clean, since they have not seen it. They might also get in a dog fight with another dog, which will not be cool to anyone. Imagine the trouble that it would make. The owner of the other dog will blame you for letting your dog attack his dog, and this will create an intense discussion that could be avoided. And, even more, if your dog is running freely in the streets, then a car might pass and just kill it, accidentally. I'm sure that the driver would not like to have that weight in his conscience just because he ran over a dog that you have let running freely. And it does not end there. Let your dog run freely, and what if it attacks a person? Yes, a common citizen might be attacked by your dog, even if that citizen did provoke it. But the fault will all be yours later, and as a result you will have to pay a large amount of money. Think I am done? Let me add the last thing... Your dog, while running freely, might get in an accident, like getting stuck somewhere or breaking a leg... And sometimes you will not see it, so you will not be able to help your dog. Only hours later you will find out where the dog is, but then the pain caused to the dog will already be too intense. I'm sure none of us would like that. Don't you agree that it is better to take them for a walk in leashes? Respectfully, Munhozmib.

I always abide by the dictum, 'let sleeping dogs lie' or in this case, let dog-lovers be. They might bite worse than their dogs. Cheers!!

I would love to let my dog just run free but if I did I would be fined and the dog would be punished, and if I got caught more than one the dog might lose his life. My partner walks with the dog off the lead when he can get away with it and no one is looking, like at night, or in special parks or bushland. Also the walking is good for both of their health.

lol, well i dont have a dog right now but i think there are a couple reasons.. for one.. if u let your dog loose n it ruins someones property or hurts someone or attacks another dog, your in trouble.. so if your walkin the dog thats alot less likely to happen.. also.. i think some people just like to get out for a walk themselves n get both things done at once that way...

I hope I understood your question right, if not, sorry. =P I think what you're referring to is walking a dog on a leash and why people insist on using one when they can let the dog run free. Some places, though, simply aren't suitable for doing so. Many people are afraid of dogs where I live and here it's considered dangerous and provocative to let the dog run on its own. It's doesn't agree with the culture of the country at all, so if someone has a dog, they usually try to find times when no one is outside to walk their dog, usually on a leash. Another good reason for leashes is that dogs that aren't trained can't control their behaviour and don't listen to their owners. They can attack other people and be hard to control. It's risky having even a well-trained dog run beside the street. Having a dog run on its own is one of the benefits of having a well-trained dog, however, many people simply do not put enough effort for this and find it easier to use a leash.

I have a dog and yes I walk it on a lead, but only in areas where if it was running free it could be in danger, that is called being a responsible dog owner. However I also allow my dog to run free in enclosed fields and dog exercise areas where he is not in danger from passing traffic.
