privacy, how to surf safe & anonymous?

Hello, i would like to know how to surf safe and anonymous. I tried some web proxy (the ones you can use directly from your browser), but i don't know if they are really safe. Can any one tell me how to setup my computer for a safe and anonymous surfing? And how can i test if i'm really anonymous? Thanks
