How to advertise web shops?

I have a web shop that i need to promote. I have tried google adwords and yahoo marketing but they are expensive. Does anybody have any other ideas or websites where i can advertise for free if possible.

That is a good question, my wife just started an online business. I would like to know how to promote her site too. perhaps I can learn something here. Thanks.
