try linux mint. its an ubuntu based distro with a nice packages re-organized.
i think most linux distro is okay. fedora is nice if you have unmetered internet connection for update etc. mandrive is wow if you use non free version, as their customer support is second to none.
pick any distro and install gnome desktop rather than kde as it is fairly easier to manage. openoffice is a nice replacement for office. vlc is the best media player.

if you have free internet connection at night, then you can install any linux distro and update/install package at night to save $. Make sure you install Gnome as a desktop and not kde.
You can get linux mint from http://www.linuxmint.com . Have a nice day.

Why didn't you post this in the Linux section of mylot?Anyway I think Ubuntu 8.10 is the best OS for you.It is very easy to use and safe. Also they have an incredible online repository from which you can download many essential softwares.

I have used Redhat v7.1, Redhat 9, Mandrax 9 and 10, Redhat enterprise 4 and Ubuntu. From my experience Mandrax is very user friendly but needs a high amount of RAM otherwise the computer becomes slow. But it does most of the things on its own. Not much linux knowledge is needed.

well i feel fedora and suse are the best versions of linux which is similar to windows and provides a easy GUI and options a lot like windows. users find these two versions of linux very easy to use and more so all windows users prefer these versions of linux
