My sister-in-law had the gastric bypass surgery to help her control her weight. She said that one of the things they tell you is not to drink anything before during or after a meal. The liquid will speed up the digestion process by merely flushing the food through your system before your body has a chance to break it down and get the nutrients out. It's kinda like wasting your food. Also, it makes you feel fuller so you stop eating, but you are hungry again sooner.

I know people who will drink a lot of water before they eat so that they are full and wont eat as much. They figure it's a good way to diet, but aparently not.

I found this at
http://dorischua.com/2008/06/25/drinking-at-meal-times-to-be-avoided/
It has become a habit for most of us to drink with our daily meals. Do you know that drinking freely during meal times can be harmful? Not only does it encourage hasty eating, but dilutes the gastric juice, and thus lessens the activity. The food should be chewed until sufficiently moistened by saliva to allow it to be swallowed. When large quantities of fluid are taken into the stomach, digestion does not begin until a considerable portion of the fluid has been absorbed. If cold foods or drinks are taken with the meal, such as ice-cream, ice-water, iced milk or tea, the stomach is chilled, and a long delay in the digestive process is occasioned. So take it easy with your drinks during meal times to aid healthy digestion.
The Asian cultures especially Chinese also say that cold drinks should not be taken after a meal. Only warm drinks. This helps your stomach acids dissolve fat and process cholesterol preventing high cholesterol, obesity, clogged arteries.

In my own opinion the reason why I was not allowed to drink water before eating when I was a kid is because I will get full immediately and lose my appetite. My parents always warn me to eat first and just drink water after eating or finishing the food. My question though during those days is what if I get full and I need water to clear my throat? Should they still forbid me to drink water? Today I usually drink water in the middle of my eating time because I enjoy the food I eat and I always want to feel satisfied. There are some chances where I drink beverage first especially if it is a juice before eating my meals because I am thirsty more than hungry. And with that I could still eat a lot, contrary to what others believe that you will get full if you drink first before eating.

Small drinks during a meal are permitted if necessary, but you shouldn't take a bite of food, then take a big gulp of liquid. Many people teach their children this way because they want them to get in the habit of chewing their food well and eating slowly to digest it properly. They may not know the scientific reason, but that is the way they've been taught and they believe that's the right way.

that's especially harmful because we need a concentrated gastric juice to digest the food but water dilutes that. imagine mixing grease and water together. waht happens? that's what happens inside if we dilute the gastric juices.

...yes, but at the right timing. It should be done at 1-hour gaps before and after eating. The total amount of water in a day should be 8 to 10 glasses or 2 -3 liters and must be done in between meals and again, at i-hour gaps.

I have read aboout a few researches that mentioned that it is better not to drink while we are eating. Many years ago I used to drink and eat at the same time especially when I am at a party. However, a few years back, not only that I read about it on those researches but also I was told by many people that it is not a good practice to eat and drink at the same time.
All of them are telling me that I should eat my meal first until I am fully done with that. Then it is recommended to just take a five minutes break and themn only we should go for the drinks...
However, if you are choking, I would suggest that you forget about the rules and go for the drink straight away as that would be safer for you. Cheers!
