Don't get me wrong. This is just my opinion. Tell him the things he would achieve when he wins. Like trophies, medals, girls/boys attention (popularity), scholarships and more.

interesting topic.
There is a saying: "It is one thing to know, it is another to feel."
It is amazing that some people have no desire to win over other people. On the other hand, some would do anything to win over other people. Is it humility lacking? Is it the thrill of winning?
Perhaps to make someone love to win, is to go against another's nature. If winning is everything in the case in point, then perhaps, we start by selecting people with the both the desire to win and the ability to win?
Cheers

if he is in the field of Tae Kwon Do...
then,
he must change Martial Art....
because that Art of Tae Kwon Do is not compatible to him.....
if you said he has the speed and power,
why not try learning Kung Fu?????
Kung Fu such as Wing Chun....
speed and power is very important in Kung Fu.... it increase his technique into a supreme ultimate.....
since Tae Kwon Do is a ONE STEP BEHIND YOUR OPPONENT....
but Wing Chun Kung Fu is a ONE STEP AHEAD TO YOUR OPPONENT...
