Are you pro or anti gay marriage? And why? Why do I hear so often that gay marriage would somehow lessen the meaning of a heterosexual marriage? How does two men, or women, getting married and paying their mortgage together and living their lives together make any difference whatsoever in the lives of a married straight couple?

For my last wedding, I went to the justice of the peace with my guy and we exchanged vows. It had nothing to do with Religion, yet we are considered legally married. Gay men and women do not have that same option. In fact, gay people are the only group left in the US who cannot legally marry an adult of their choosing.
Marriage is a legal bond, not a religious one. It should not be open only to heteros. If my brother were to marry his partner, it would not hurt my marraige at all. To believe otherwise is silly, to say the least.

Accepting or rejecting gay marriage is largely a religious issue. I'm a Christian but I don't really mind if society decides to accept gay marriage. I believe that If the majority of society decides that it's okay, then religion would have to take a step back. Besides, Christianity isn't the only religion in the world. It's a matter of respecting everybody elses beliefs and preferences. The world is diverse and constantly changing and we have to adopt to its diversity and changes.

Sure, but Athiests, buddists, hindus, pagan and every other is considered married as long as it is man and woman. Why can I be called married to the Justice of the Peace, but my brother and his partner of 10 years cannot? religion should not call the shots and discriminate against gay people.

On the question of "lessening the meaning of heterosexual marriage" .... Which is more "degrading" - a lesbian couple who have been together for 60+ years or all of the celebrity marriages that last weeks or months (or ELEVEN HOURS, Ms. Spears) and end in messy, angry, childish divorces plastered all over the covers of supermarket tabloids?
Marriage, legally speaking, is a contract between two people. Being married, legally speaking, gives two people access to one another's lives on a legal level. Not being married, legally speaking, denies people that access. I have a huge diatribe about Jim and John and John's car accident and Jim wanting to take John off of life support but since they aren't married, John's emotional mother, unwilling to let go of her "little boy," makes the decision instead....but I'll leave that for another time.
The point is that when it comes down to it, who can be allowed to marry, at least in the US, is a legal question and should not be decided with religious bias, whichever religion that might be.

the way i see it...we didnt give rights to women or blacks...but as a society we grew up and accepted people...why cant we do that for gays? they deserve their rights just like the blacks and women did.
