Why is my computer so noisy?

Why does my computer get so noisy when the anti-virus software, camtasia, and some other softwares run? I think the noise is the fan, but I am not sure why it makes so much noise. It only does it sometimes. Do you think maybe the processor is overheating? I am confused, and it is super-annoying! Also my computer runs much more slowly during those times. It is a laptop, and I do leave it on mostly all day long. I would love your input.

The noise you heard could be from the hard disk. The cooling fan may also be involved if your laptop controls the speed in relation to system or CPU temperature.
When an anti virus runs a scan it is going to continuously access the hard disk. When there are other programs are running at the same time the hard disk will be made to work harder with the needles jumping all over the place, thus an increase in noise.
At the same time the CPU has to work harder, so it becomes hotter. The computer also runs slower because the CPU has to divide its time among the running programs and a reduced available RAM. Many anti virus programs use a lot of memory while running a system scan.
all the best,

This sounds like what it is. The computer does not actually overheat. At least, not that I can tell. It does not randomly shut off or anything. It keeps going. And usually, when I turn off the offending program it stops, but sometimes it doesn't. I am afraid to work on it myself, since I need it for school, but I may have it serviced later. Thanks for all your advice, guys!

Mine also has that problem.
When several softwares run, the CPU 70% works, and the noisy can be heard in the whole room. For the heat of the computer should be sent out at the same time.
I think to solve the problem, we should to find a way to make our computer cool dowm easily and if the condition permit, do not run so many program at the same time.

Hello, esantra.
I am not a hardware expert. I do not know much about hardware and things like that. However, my CPU also starts making some bigger noise when I run some programs. I am almost sure that it is my cooler, trying to maintain the temperature. Now, if you are using a laptop, what could it be? I am not sure if laptops have coolers... There must be something inside there that keeps the temperature down...
Respectfully,
Munhozmib.

If it is while AV software runs I submit that it is the hard disk. It might be going bad, or it might just be loud. Check the BIOS for diagnostic utilities.

The primary noise makers in a system are the fans, including the cpu fan. There could perhaps be a buildup of dust causing the fans to not work at optimum performance. This noice could also be coming from the hard drive, if it is faulty in any way. This isn't absolute though. The fact that your computer starts to run more slowly, this may be heat related again, probably due to the fan not working properly. Andrew

Hmm if it was a desktop computer I would suggest opening it up and giving it a thorough clean. The fans do tend to make a lot more noise when there's dust caught up in them, and yeah when there's loads of programs running the fan runs faster and the processor's working harder so it makes it even worse.
I myself had my computer roaring louder than my Xbox 360 (which is saying something) and when I opened it up, sure enough there was a fart-load of dust in there. After cleaning it up, it runs nice and smooth, really quiet and everything.
For a laptop, I can't be certain but I think the same rules apply.
Hope I helped.

Well i was facing the same problem. There are only two moving parts in the computer
1. H.D.D
2. Fan
the noise can be from either of them. If your laptop is overheating, i suggest get it serviced. Most probably, the intake of air for the fan has been blocked and this inturn heats up the processor and the fan rotateds fast in an attempt to pull in more air.

Are you people here saying that the processor is the one that is causing that noise or am i missing your point herei mean people the processor doesn't move and has some kind of fan, but there is a cooler fan which on top of the processor to make it cool.
If you talking about your computer being slow then it could probably be that you have a virus, if your computer overheats it will automatically shut-down sometimes without any warning. The fact that you are using a laptop can be very confusing because fans on the laptop are so quite that you hardly hear them when they turn.
I am not sure what kind of noise is that coming from your computer but what i have seen in most DVD writer will make some annoying noise and most people thought it was the hard drive.
But when you say your computer run slow during that time it makes that noise then i think there might be something wrong with the hardware itself, try to switch it off for sometime and turn it back at it because you mentioned that you do spend lot of time on it

i tink Over heating will not cause any sound it only makes the computer to shut down only just do one think remove the dome of the cabnet and on the computer and observe what is making the noise i think you will ba able to find out so else do one thing i came to know when the temparature goes down the processor will not be able to work properly and it makes some sound i don't how far it is correct but check for this also

yes probalby is the processor you have to put it in places where the air of the processor moves fluently if is the processor and that would explain why it is slower on that times
