Should higher education be free?

Should there be a free option available for colleges and other higher education? We have public schools in America through grade 12, so why not extend that and allow everyone to learn a trade if they choose? Do you think it's a good idea? Is it acheivable?

What a great idea! I have 8 Masters' and a doctorate, but I would never have stopped studying if I could afford the tuition. I think people who qualify should be able to go to college free, and there should be many ways to qualify. Others could pay if they want to go, and keep trying to qualify. Most likely, a series of tests and interviews would be the best way, since no school could survive without tuition.
Right now, I need to take a course or two to renew my teaching license, and I'm trying to find a free course.
