Hey Everyone. Do you agree with this statement that "Emotions are well expressed only in our Mother Tongue"?? Even though I know English, when I need to talk to someone about my problems, I feel comfortable talking in Tamil(which is my mother tongue). How about you?? Some people know English better than their own Mother Tongue. Which one do you prefer when you want to express your feelings???

English is more OK for me to express deep feelings. I have many times felt as you told. Some languages are better to express some emotions. I have a feeling that Tamil language is better to express anger and emotional outbursts. I feel my mother tongue, Malayalam is not enough to express inner feelings of mind (for me). It is good for me to have a debate on literature but often have to depend on some English words. After all mother tongue is most preferred, wherever we live and however we live. I like my mother tongue and teach my children too eventhough far away from mother land.

Ya, I have my roots in Kerala still eventhough I have been out for the past 16 years. Still keeping fresh memories of torrential rain and tropical aroma of that part of the world. It brings nostalgic feelings. I can talk, read and write Tamil too apart from Hindi and now Japanese. But still I need my mother tongue, because that is what made me.

You might be right in this thing although there might be times when things are better expressed in English. I guess it is a matter of choice. Cheers!!

I think emotions are well expressed in the language we are most proficient in. This is usually our mother tongue. There were times when I was more comfortable expressing myself in English. It depended to a certain extent on the mood I was in. all the best

Actually whenever I need to speak my mind I prefer any language I know(its usually a mix of English, hindi & Malayalam).Although malayalam is my mother-tongue, I am comfortable and fluent with all 3 languages, so its not a problem to say out my mind. Whichever language I use, getting across my thoughts to the person I am speaking to, is what matters. I do agree, its the language you are comfortable with is the most you use to get your feelings out (and mostly it is your mather tongue).

Yes it is true. I am most comfortable in Bengali. Many times while responding here in mylot, I have racked my brains for that exact word to express a situation…that word seems so common in Bengali yet in English, I could not find it! And then not only love, when you want to abuse somebody, our mother tongue is the best. You can never be rude enough to another person in a foreign tongue.

Dear friend,When I remind of one of my old English teach I would not like to agree as whenever that teacher gets angry she usually use English language even though her mother tongue is Malayalam a south Indian language. The most word that I had heard from that teacher when emotionally touched are "get out you bast*rd" and "what on the hell is happening ". I hope each individual have their own ways of expressing their emotions, may be language too depends accordingly.

Hi Vidhya, I agree with you. We can express our feelings well through our mother tongue. We started to hear our mother tongue from the beginning itself so naturally we are becoming well versed in the language. The other languages we learn only later sometime. One thing is true, if you are hearing other languages from the beginning instead of your mother tongue, you can express it well through that language than your mother tongue. I think it depends on the circumstances we are growing up. Thanks and take care.

Emotions are well expressed only in the dialect one is comfortable to speak. There are many people who are fluent in English inspite of having some other mother tongue, so they can express their feelings well in English only. So it depends on the fluency of the language one speaks.

Hi vidhya, very true that our emotions are expressed only in mother tongue.Even we speak English with our friends and others ,when we want to express our emotions we feel comfortable only in our mother tongue.I prefer both but only in our own language we would be able to express deep from our heart. My mother tongue is telugu and we live in tamilnadu. So I can speak telugu, tamil and english fluently.I can express comfortably in all the three languages. thanks for sharing.happy mylotting.

hi... i agree with the statement"emotions are well expressed in mother tongue"...i like to express my emotions in my own language rather than english and i feel comfortable in it...may be since mother tongue is used from our childhood we prefer to use our mother tongue rather than expressing in english and also when we are in highly emotional we lack the words in english to express the feelings and so they prefer mother tongue...

Yup. You are right. When we are emotional we will find it difficult to search for words in other languages. While if its in our Mother Tongue, we could clearly express the feel. Happy to have your response. Happy mylotting.

thts true vidhyavini,,one can express his/her feelings much more better in his/her mother toungue.Simple logic io think is surrounding where person is bourn n brought up.Child always speak first his/her mother tongue, whether its english, hindi, tamil or any kind of language. So naturally he would express his feelings better in tht language..

I would say not the mother tongue, but the language that you often speak. For example consider a child whose mother tongue is Hindi. He used to speak hindi until 4 years of age and after that his family shifted to US and now he is 21. In this case his emotions will be best expressed in English and not Hindi. So, it not about mother tongue, but the language that you often speak.

Yes, I quite agree with you that emotions are well expressed in our mother tonge. If I know that the other fellow knows the same language i.e. Hindi, I express myself better in Hindi. I can well express myself in English too, however, there is no substitute for mother tonge, provided you know it well. Good Post!

I think it depends on the people, if he feels more convenient, he will express in English although his native language is not English. For me, I prefer to use my native language (Indonesia) because my English is not good and I'm still learning how to speak English clearly & fluently. :)

Hello! Well, I disagree with that statement. Lol, I am Chinese by race, and my mother tongue is also Chinese. However, I am more fluent in my English be it through verbal or written communication. I have been failing my Mother Tongue ever since I was 10. And up to now, I cannot express myself well in Chinese. This could be due to one's education. In Singapore, our Mother Tongues is considered our second language whereas English is our first language. As such, majority of us are more fluent in our English rather than our own mother tongues. When I am talking to someone about my problems, I am more comfortable conversing in English, as speaking in Chinese would fail me at times. I could only use the most basic Chinese in verbal communication, and could only read and speak the most basic Chinese. And I suffer when I am in Malaysia, as I get looked down by the Chinese in Malaysia, especially when I am talking in the simplest of CHinese. Lol, so I prefer English to Chinese in that sense.

I believe self expression really depends on how fluent we are in the languages we use. Albeit being a Chinese and always speaking with my husband in the Cantonese dialect, I actually express my love to him (back when we were still dating) in English. hehehe.... This was what I said: "I like you just the way you are because you make me like myself just the way I am" To be quite honest, I really don't know how to say the above line in Cantonese without sounding cheesy, mushy and downright goosebumps rising. Hahahaaha... Expressing it in English makes me feel that it's more romantic in a low profile way. I guess you can say I'm am not fluent enough in my own mother tongue... ;p Happy mylotting
