Recently in my state cellphones are being offered to low income families free of charge. It's through a company called Safe Link. Apparently as of now it's only available to a few states but I saw they were to add about 10 more states very soon.
What are your thoughts about providing free cellphones annd service to low income families?

I think it is a good idea for emergencies, finding job, keeping track of kids and etc. but there should be a limit on usage if my tax dollars are going to pay for it, they are not cheap. my bill is usually about 200 a month for 4 phones(me and three kids)and I don't think thats to bad.I'd be interested in seeing more about this.

Yes, I agree with you.....I must also say that I'm all for helping the low income FAMILIES that are having hard times, but they make it to easy for people to take advantage of programs.they come up with good programs but with not so good guidelines and enforcement.

That's interesting. I've never heard anything about this practice before. o_o
I think that any form of help given to low-income families is good, but I feel that giving them cell phones isn't really proper prioritizing. What I mean is, that while they could make efficient and beneficial use of cell phones in the family, they would have a much greater advantage if the money used from cell phones was put into something like healthcare or education: basic needs or life support. Cell phones aren't essential to life, but healthcare is. Cell phones can't help them make a living, as education can.
I find that cell phones are more of a luxury than a basic need that every family should have, as many are starving or suffering from horrible diseases. I think it's great that some states are taking action to help those in need, but maybe they should have chosen for another kind of help to give that could prove to be more beneficial.

I agree a cellphone is a luxery but at the same time I could see if it was someones only means of outside communication. They have been cutting the low income healthcare budget in my state for sometime now. I'm very surprised they are making this available.
