i have studied in my school days that tomato belongs to berry family which means that tomato is a fruit but my friend says that tomato is supposed to be a vegetable and not a fruit so can anyone tell whether tomato is a fruit or a vegetable.

A tomato is a fruit. If it has seeds inside of it then it is a fruit. There are a lot of fruits that are considered vegetables like peppers.
Some flowers, like broccoli, are often called vegetables. However they are not vegetables they are flowers. We just happen to eat the flowers so that confuses some people.
