How do I get pre-approved for a home loan?

I've been wanting to buy a house and I've found a house that I really want. But I can't get pre-approved because I can't prove that my partner has an income (he gets paid cash) and even if my mom or dad wanted to help me out, they both have bad credit. Anyone know what I could do? Banks are getting very stingy.
