Because of intercaste marriage of my niece who herself is a Punjabi, her hubby a Bengali, her daughter can speak 4 languages at the age of 5. With her maternal grandparents, she speaks Punjabi, with paternal grandparents it's Bengali. With her own parent she speaks English and Hindi, being a national language, she speaks quite well. Have any of you got married with a different language speaking partner? What language your kids speak? Is'nt it interesting to know that a child, at the age of 5 can speak 4 languages?

Wow.. That's very talented of her. My cousin is also 5 and she can speak 3. She can speak English, Mandarin and a Chinese dialect called Hokkien. When I was 5, I could speak 3 languages too. Currently, I'm learning Japanese.

Undoubtedly kids are much more smarter than we thought. I remember I tried to learn Russian at the age of 12 but gave up soon finding it difficult to learn.LOl!

Pretty impressive, I don't know how they did it but they did a good job in training their daughter to speak 4 languages at the age of 5. I am having problems already in training my boys to speak 3 languages. I guess its because we have only one primary language at home, the one that my husband and his parents speak. I am the only who is more fluent in English and who knows how to speak in Chinese. And I am the one who is not home most of the time. Imagine me having to say something 3 times for them to know what a single word meant hehe

Yes, it is a known fact that very young children 3 &4 mostly, pick up languages very fast... I have seen the same with my own four year old learning a new language over three months in two seperate instances

It is incredible how kids can learn fast. I heard that the best way to learn something is when you are 5-6 years old because then our brain is like sponge. We remember anything. I have a friend who is Croatian and his wife is French. The kid speaks both Croatian and French. It can't be bad to know many languages after all, can it? :D

I agree with you that kids learn fast. Other day I was reading in a magazine that they are able to increase their vocabulary at a much faster pace as compared to adults.
