Currently, if a USA senator resign or die and the seat become open, it possibility the senator can be appointed and in the case of Illinois the senate seat was allegedly up for auction to the highest bidder. I f Hilliary Clinton is confirmed a Kennedy wants to inherit the senate seat. The danger is that person appointed can be the incumbent and be extremely difficult to defeat!!!!A better solution is to have mandatory election of all US Senators. What do you think about this????

I think all US senators should be elected. It is the only way to guarantee that the seat is not put up for sale to the highest bidder. An open election is the only way to guarantee this.

I think that, since the Senators represent the States (not the people in them), then it should be left up to the states to decide who should represent them. With that right comes responsibilities, so it is also up to the states to police themselves. What the state of Illinois (and others) need to be asking itself is, do they want to continue being the embarrassment they are?

I think you may be right. It certainly would have circumvented some of the newsmaking graft that we are hearing about in Illinois.

This is one of many issues about which I have somewhat mixed feelings. Ideally I think all Senators and any other officials that are usually elected for that matter should be elected in the even of a vacancy in midterm. However, I understand it's very, VERY costly so I can see how it makes sense to have them appointed for an interim term as they normally do for vacant Senate seats. This whole situation in Illinois really makes me think about it more, though. I hope, I mean REALLY hope what's going on there is the exception rather than the rule, and I think it must be unless there have been some people in other states who have had an incredible ability to keep secrets. I'm actually a bit glad this happened with this goofy gov now, when the whole nation is watching so it wouldn't just get swept aside and forgotten until the next time. I agree there's always the possibility that the appointee will have what may seem like an unfair advantage should they seek reelection but the truth is they don't always win and some actually just take the seat for the interim term until the next regularly scheduled election as the man who will replace V.P.-ElectBiden in the Senate intends to do.
