I have always found Echinacea tea to be most helpful for the first sign of cold symptoms whether it be a sore throat, or watery eyes and stuffed up nose. But recently I have taken to adding a wedge of lemon to that Echinacea tea. Not only does it make the tea taste better, it works like a charm.

Gargling with salty water will kill the bacteria. The best way to treat a sore throat is with a spoon full of honey and lemon. Of course, the best solution is to eliminate the cause instead of treating the symptoms. Eating half a leaf of fresh sage combined with 1/8 a teaspoon of turmeric spice will greatly reduce the drainage and congestion; about as well as the pharmaceutical medications (and without their side effects). You should make your body alkaline to boost its uptake of oxygen. Drinking homemade lemonade with a pinch of baking soda periodically is a fast, safe, and effective way of doing this. Lemon juice is an acid, but it makes the body more alkaline because of the way it gets processed. The baking soda will add buffering bicarbonates to make the body resistive to becoming acidic again, which is the normal state during sickness. None of these things will provide immediate relief for the throat pain. That requires time.
To to treat the pain (and most effectively kill the bacteria) use a small amount of cayenne pepper with 3% hydrogen peroxide in a gargle. Sea salt is also fine to add. The remedies mentioned in previous answers really are effective, but not as fast. Your body will very rapidly deplete its iodine reserves anytime you are sick, so I recommend adding a quarter-sized patch of 2% iodine on your skin once a day, and more often if it absorbs rapidly. A couple of drops of 3% hydrogen peroxide in each ear periodically is helpful too. Even drinking a tiny amount of it in a drink will give your body a tremendous boost.

i don't know if you have a chinese medicine store in your place, but there's one syrup there that is really effective for soar throat. you just drink a tablespoon of it an drink a luke warm water and you will feel better. the name of the syrup is peh pak qua, i don't know if i spell it right. but if you don't have a chinese store you can try ginger powder mixed with warm water.

Hello and welcome to MyLot ericphelan. Sorry to hear you have a sore throat. I know it can be very annoying. Hubby doesn't like going to doctors either, so when he has one I usually recommend that he gargle several times a day with warm salt water. It's one of the home remedies that my mother always suggested and apparently it had been passed down thru the generations as an inexpensive remedy. The only time it didn't work for me was when I had a case of strep throat, but if you're not running a fever and have no other symptoms it should work for you.
