How to change templates?

So in Blogger blogs, when you change the template, you lose all your widgets and their configurations and information. Does anyone know how to avoid losing all the widgets? I know that you can take the widget code from the old site and then copy and paste it into the new template, but I have a lot of widgets and this will take some time. Does anyone know a different way to switch templates without losing widgets? Thanks in advance!

Its best to stick to one template. Preferably classic template as it can be tweaked as much as you want. And yes you lose the widgets everytime you change template or atleast you lose the current layout. Also you need to edit the HTML for headers, title, META tags etc. So decide and stick to a particular template.

I agree that it is best to stick to one template; you should pick one you like in the beginning so you don't have to go through the trouble of changing it later with all your widgets and added code. However, I did not do this and have to do it now. My blog is a bit crowded and I need to switch to a three column template. This is why I started this discussion.
