Can chocolates really kill pups?

Chocolates - Pup killer, true or false?

I heard it's got something to do with the dog's nervous system. They say that letting dogs eat chocolates will kill them. Some say it's safe. Which is which? Moochie's been eating chocolate because i can't stand it everytime he makes this pitiful face.

yes i've read an article explaining the concepts of chocolates and dogs. it is caused by an ingredient in chocos which is the theobromine. small amounts will be fine. anyways it also depends on the weight of the dog. over consumption of chocolate for dogs can lead to poisoning when mild ones can only cause digestive problems

Hmm.. I'll take note of that. Moochie's just a small dog. Maybe a small piece is enough to kill him.

small amounts will not be fine. it builds up in the dogs body. even the occasional small bit of chocolate can cause the toxin to build up to the level where it could kill your dog.

ive asked a vet about this..and he said that YES chocolate can KILL dogs. like another person posted... the amount of chocolate and the weight/age of the dog are the main factors. just STOP feeding your dog chocolate completely!! why take the chance that the one little bit you just gave him might be the one bite TOO MUCH? loving and caring for your pets well-being also means denying him things that are not safe..no matter how much he begs!

please don't EVER give your dog chocolate. even a small bit, just occasionally. the chemical in chocolate that is toxic to dogs cannot be processed by their body. as a result it remains in their system. any small bit of chocolate could be the one that tips the toxin to the level where it harms your dog. people have been saying it's okay to give it occasionally, and this is NOT TRUE. please, never ever let them have chocolate.

I'll take your words Galena. Better safe than sorry. There are lots of alternative delicious food anyway. I'll keep that in mind to NEVER feed chocolates on dogs.

Small amounts can't be too harmful. What the vets didn't say when they made the statement about chocolate killing dogs is that it is the pure chocolate that will kill the dog. When it is diluted with sugar, milk and other ingredients it isn't as dire as the pure chocolate (baking chocolate). I have had dogs that have pigged out on Halloween candy or the dark chocolate that I love and they didn't get sick let alone die. But a steady diet of chocolate isn't good for the dog. You could get a package of doggie type chocolate or carob and let them have a bit of that when you're eating your chocolates. I always have an alternative for the dogs when I eat chocolate that is healthier for them. If your dog eats a large amount of chocolate (4 oz or more) consult your vet...if it's pure chocolate contact the vet immediately (Pure being baking chocolate that hasn't been diluted with other ingredients like sugar and milk etc.) Also, it does depend on the size of the dog. A Rottweiler or Great Dane can withstand more than a Chihuahua.

small amounts CAN be harmful. it's not a good idea to ever let your dog have chocolate. yes they can eat some without being ill, but because the toxin remains in the body, any time could be the last time they get away with it.

My Moochie's a Dachshund and he's been eating Cadbury everytime we take a bar here. He's giving me this poor face so i can't help but give. But next time, no more chocolates for him. I've talked to him about it and he seems oblivious to what i was talking about lol!

oh my god. LOL dont give Moochie any more! Poor lil guy. I think some can handle it but others cant. it does make them very sick though. I made a huge bag of chocolate brownies and forgot it on my porch, well ironically this really annoying dog from next door stole it and ate it all that night. I found it in the morning bythe bushes. She never came onto my property again, she's alive but she knows better now. MUAHHAHAH!!!

Sure! Moochie's had enough. He's four years old, still a kid and hates chips but still no more chocolates for him. Moochie's kind of picky with what food to eat.

As its been said already chocolate IS TOXIC to dogs (and cats as well I believe but I'm not positive on that one)...Being a dog owner myself this is something I've looked into and all the reliable places Ive checked do say that dogs should NOT be given chocolate in any amount.. Just so you know, grapes are another thing dogs should never be given..

I'd rather eat the grapes myself than give it to Moochie. No sad face will work for me this time lol!

I also sometimes gave my dogs chocolate when they were around when I'm eating chocolates.. I also can't stand seeing them looks very pity just to give them some chocolates.. But many people told me that its not good for dogs so I'm trying to not giving them chocolates anymore.. But I don't see any bad effects from my dogs eating chocolates.. I really don't know the answer.. Sorry!

Yes it can kill a dog. My dog I had ate a hole solid choc. Bunny for easter had it up on the table. Didn't die from the choc. or me I was so mad. Was a gift for my Choc. loving mother. I got over it and so did she as I made her stay outside as choc. didn't agree with her. After that I put in the frig. she couldn't geet in there. Have a great day.

Please do not give your pup chocolate, ever! Our vet has cautioned us about this on several occasions; it is apparently like poison to the dog's system. I buy special chocolate dog treats that look and I presume taste like chocolate but they don't contain cocoa and are made especially for canines. My dog loves them. Another thing our vet had warned us about is onions as they are not good form pups either, so if they ever consume "human" food make sure there are no onions. I know you love him but please stop giving your dog chocolate, buy him special treats instead, he will love them just as much.

Yup, i stopped giving him chocolates. With all the response here, i'm convinced that it's too dangerous to give dogs chocolates. I will also monitor the food here my family members give him and make sure there are no onions. I learned about that today that onions are bad.

I don't know if it will kill him but I can't think it is good for him. Actually I have read a few articles that say we should not feed our pets human foods at all, not even table scraps. It has something to do with the preservatives that are added to processed food. If you are worried about it but know that you are a soft touch maybe you could get him some special treats designed for dogs to give him instead.

Well I heard that chocolate it is not good for dogs. I have a dog and like you I give hime some chocolate since he cries all along to have some and when my child is eating he graps chocolate from her hands. He is eating too much food and is getting fat. Hope I will try to put him on diet
