On cnn this morning i read that a 21 year old college student was killed. She had called 911 and it took the police 48 minutes to get there they said because the call didnt seem like it was importaint. This angered me because i thought that when a person calls 911 and requests assistance it should be held as an emergency. I understand there are some instances when its not an emergency for instance when a person hits 911 accidentily but come on she requested the help. What is your opinion on this?

my opinion is that the 911 operator should be charged with negligent homicide.

the operator stated they didnt hear any thing that seemed wrong. But it does state the tape of the conversation you can hear scuffeling around. Im not sure if the operator should be held accountible OR the police.

I'm sure her family has already contacted a lawyer...and their reasoning just isn't good enough...
If I called 911 it is an emergency..No if's and's or but's....
It took 48 minutes to get there....Where was it coming from another state?
You don't happen to have a link to this?

this news really upsets me because according to your story this students life could have been saved if the police made a quicker intervention. I do think that it is a shame of the 911 service for not provide adequate service in such circumstances. I do advoocate better use of 911 and that it should be use in emergency cases only. If it is used wrongly, our relatives, friends or ourselves will end up suffereing.

Another horrible 911 mistake. This is like the second or third one i heard recently. I swear are these people trained well for their job. If they can't do it there are plenty of people out there without jobs. By the way how did the student die? Did it say?

I think 911 probably gets more prank calls than real ones and the operators after a while feel they can judge which ones are which. Plus after doing that job on a regular basis they grow less and less sensitive to the calls. The human side of them can make an error in judgment and unfortunately just because of the nature of their work the error can have deadly consequences. For that reason I would hope that if they think something is a prank, they will treat it serious anyway and err on the side of caution.

thats how i feel as well.. I know growing up i used to dial all kinds of numbers 1234567890 on the phone and my parents had to pay for me making them calls. I do understand it can happen. The thing that gets me is it wasnt an accidental call She requested help it wasnt as if she dialed 911 and no one said a word there fore i believe it should have been held as an emergency
