Hello Everyone,
I am wanting to start keeping a few chickens in my garden for a few reasons.
We have enough room for them, we will enjoy lots of eggs, the grandchildren will love to feed them and take care of them and so will I come to think of it lol
Plus i think having chickens in your own garden is really warm and homely.
I just wondered what other people's experiences were with their own chickens, such as which ones have produced the best/most eggs, which chickens have the most personality and which chickens are their highly recommended.
Anyone who has any pictures too, it would be great to see them.
Thanks everyone

The best chickens for outright laying production are Leghorns. I don't recommend them for the home producer though because they are extremely flighty. A good scare can put the whole flock off laying for a whole week and it doesn't take much to scare them. We keep Barred Plymouth Rock. I like them because they are good egg producers and they are very calm. My kids treat them as pets and pick them up, carry them around and play with them all the time. Doesn't seem to bother their laying at all. The roosters also seem less likely to attack the kids and I have had problems with other breeds and crossbreeds in that regard. That isn't to say the roosters are wimpy. They take care of their hens as well as any other breed I come across. I have had no experience with the Arucana mentioned by the previous poster. I have heard good things about that breed and the colored eggs are pretty cool.
