Best way to keep in touch with long distance friends

I have a few good friends from school and college days but they all live in different cities now for work. Before I used to keep in touch with them through a online networking site called orkut. But now that site is blocked in my workplace. And since i donot have internet connection at home so blocking of orkut made me lost touch with some of my very good friends. Now I try to keep in touch with them through sms and occasional phone calls.I get to meet them once in a blue moon when i happen to travel to the places where they stay or they come over to mine. Do you have good friends staying away from you. How do you keep in touch with them?
