tears roll over our eyes while cutting onion,is there a harsh chemical found inside the onion?anyhow but we cannot cook without cutting onions eventhough they make us cry when we chop them.i read in a magazine that before cutting a onion a candle has to be lighted and the onions has to be chopped this would reduce the tears i do not no how far this would workout so far i have not tried.

it happens to me all the time too. But i really like cooking so i really don't care ifi cry while cutting those onions! Up to now i still don'thave the clue about how to get rid of those tears.
Never tried lighting a candle though, might as well do it so to see if it works.

I put a metal spoon in my mouth when I'm cutting onions and I find that helps. You do look incredibly stupid though, but I don't care my eyes always water when cutting onions. I have read it's to do with the way you cut them but I can't remember which way. I'll stick to my spoon for now.

My Daughter looked this up on the internet and she found a lot of information on it. It says if you put a teaspoon in your mouth while you are peeling or chopping onions your eyes won't water. It is supposed to stop the burning too. I had heard this before but I didn't remember what it was you put in your mouth. I'll have to try it before I'll say it's true.

Are you serious about this question, or are you just trying to increase the number of replies ?

I heard that you are supposed to run your knife through really cold water before the cutting of the onion. Also I read an article that said scientists have biologically engineered onions so they do not make people cry anymore. These are not on the market yet, but if they are do become available I recommend buying those if the crying part of the onion bothers you. Cheers.
