As we know, fuel as Auto energy would be hostory in the near future due to it's air pollution problem and the limit of crude oil. We would exhaust all the crude oil on the earth one day. And humanbeing has already realized the urgency of this issue. Many country are all busy finding and developing the new alternative energy source. Persoanlly I think the the next generation of alternative energy source for Auto is solar ennergy and electric drive. There is fuel and electricity mixed dirved car running on the road in my city. Through it's just a transitional product, at least which direct the way for us.

Shell has a program for producing liquid fuel from gas http://realenergy.shell.com/?page=GTLWhatIs&lang=en_GB&promo=search#GTLWhatIs
This GTL fuel might be the way forward as reserves of gas are much greater than oil and the gas can also be produced quite easily without using fossil reserves at all.

To be exact, "fuel" means anything that can be burned to drive a machine. I should have been more specific and said "gas to liquid fuel"

the alternative energy source for energy in the future could be hybrid vehicles i think they are the perfect answer for solving the problem of depleting crude and pollution problems that are effecting the world all over all the automobile majors are shifting to hybrid vehicles. i think bio-diesel can also be a very good alternative fuel research is being carried out in this field. gasoline can also be a very good alternative fuel.

I think that there are several options that could help us in the long run but sometimes it doesn't seem that they are trying to shed us of our oil dependancy until it is to late. I think that they electric cars and solar powered are a good option. You can already buy a few cars that are both electric and gas and they get excellent gas mileage and seem to be doing a good job. I would like to see them be able to make them more affordable so more people would be able to purchase them =.

well some said electric cars, other with compressed air and solar, I think it is possible electric and solar are the most common but I don't remember where I heard that they were trying to do an compressed air car so there are three possiblities and maybe all of them will be the next car generation

From what I've read, hydrogen looks promising. It's in abundant supply and the by product is water rather than pollution.
Algae as a biofuel is also attractive. It can be farmed using ocean or wastewater, it's biodegradable and cost per pound would yield 30 times more energy than other second generation fuels. And according to the Department of Energy if it replaced ALL the petroleum fuel in the U.S. it would require a farming area 1/7 of that used to produce all the corn harvested in the U.S. in the year 2000.
Slowly but surely I think we will get to a viable alternative fuel.
