carolling kids

If you're from the Philippines, you're familiar with the scene - a minimum of two children (all usually complete strangers to you) go gate-to-gate, door-to-door, singing their now standard opening song "sa maybahay ang aming bati, meri krismas na maluwalhati... ang sanhi po ng pagparito humihingi po ng aginaldo" (translation: greeting the homeowner Merry Christmas, we come asking for gifts). Tune, tone and lyrics usually all off. Sometimes they have a makeshift drum for accompaniment - a tin can and a stick - struck unrhythmically. Then they leave singing "tenk yu, tenk you, ang babait/babarat ninyo" (thank you, you are so good/you're a cheapskate) as applicable. Whenever a group comes to our door, I stop them as soon as possible, asking them to come back on December 23, not earlier and not later. If I start giving them anything now, the same kids will be coming to my door every night and some even will come back the same night. I'm thinking I'll be giving out food, mostly sweets and candies then. I'm longing to hear some really good, well-practiced carollers. Are there any in your neighborhood? How goes it in your neighborhood? Any carolling there and how do they fare? Do you hand out something to these carolling kids every time they come, do you pay attention to them at all?

Well, I guess if I also had a lot of money, I wouldn't mind allowing those kids to come by for more than one night. I don't know. Happy mylotting!

I so miss hearing those kids... even if they are off tune... i have been living in my apartment for 2 years now... and it is in the third floor... and those kids are not allowed to go up... but in the past... when december comes... i always have a tin can full of coins... and would just give some to kids singing those christmas songs infront of the gate...

Those kids can really produce such a racket with their yelling and their drums. Last night it was so bad, I actually was wishing I lived in a place like yours. Still, they really are part and parcel of Christmas in the Philippines, and I guess if I didn't hear them during this time of year, I would miss them too!

Hey! I'm a caroler! :P From an organization back in college and we send out letters to whoever would like to hear us (and hopefully give donation for our fund raising). We do pretty well - actually we're really good haha we have four voices and we practice a lot. I graduated last year so I was no longer part of the 2008 Carolfest. Hey, your idea bout giving sweets is actually good I think. But asking them to come on December 23 is even better! I think I'd tell my mom to do the same next time :D That solves a lot of problems! Thanks for the comment on my discussion!

I'll take your word for it - your organization's caroling must be good. Four voices! Yeah, suggest to your mom about just a one-time doleout to those caroling kids - makes it simpler. Thanks, too Oyen, happy new year!

We don't get carolers much anymore. They might get beat up, sued or arrested here in the U.S. the atheists are out to get Christianity out of the U.S. They have some idea that Christianity is evil. How nice it would be though, I would love to see the children singing on the 23rd. though.

Beat up, sued, or arrested. Ouch. Over here, I really hope some of those kids will come back on the 23rd. Some of them stayed long enough to hear me say I wanted at least two real Christmas songs, sung properly. And I said no drums. Season's greetings!

I used to give coins too. Then I passed by a group of kids down the street, gambling (I forget what they call it now) with coins. I prefer to share food now.

actually i give them coins for the effort of singing, but as you said if you try to give them once they will come every night or they would tell the other carolers that the owner of the house gave them money so the other carolers will go one after the other. sometimes i also give them macaroons but it seems that they don't appreciate the food they like the coins instead.

That's true, they mostly just want money. And the moment you give, there'll be no end to it until the season ends. I love macaroons, bellebads, I'll sing for it anytime!
