I am a physically challenged person and it is nice to volunteer and help an organization or some people, which makes people happy and when thank we feel that we have accomplished something in our life. I volunteered in mercy hospital my team goes every assisted living home and monitor senior citizen blood pressure and remind them if they took their med's and they thank me and sing prayer for me and that made me feel I was helpful some where.

I don't feel like you have to serve God because you volunteer. Personally, I'm an atheist. I don't know why that shocks people that an atheist volunteers so much. But to me I like to be actually doing something that makes a difference. To me converting souls and all that stuff is not volunteering or doing any type of valuable service. But volunteering in a hospital is certainly a good thing no matter why you did it.
