....it is catching. I read somewhere that when you smile to a total stranger and you will receive the same from that person. I did exactly that and experimented what I read. I purposely went out window shopping one day and when I meet people on the street or in the mall I put up my broad smile and true enough that person smiles back. I felt the sudden surge of happiness penetrating my whole body cells as I have managed to bring smiles to others too. What is more beautiful is I am able to strike a friendship as naturally a smile comes with a little friendly gesture. Try such a smile which says: "I like you," or a smile that signaled "I'm glad to see you!" Where do you meet friends? well, as a fisherman used to say: "If you want to catch fish you have to go where the fish are" If you want to make friends, you have to go where people are - for friends are just people. There people everywhere. Not all of them can or will be your friends. But among them, you will find one, two or three whom you can call friend. And she who has three true friends has three treasures. You can even meet people and have friends if you are a cripple or a "shut-in". Though you can't see my smile here in mylot but I am nothing but a true friend to you and am very thankful to mylot for making friendship possible even without seeing the beautiful smiles but only words that connect us. I know I came to the right place where I meet and made many friends from all over the world which may not be possible in the real world.

we are both believers of smiles costing friendships, frederick. it sounds now that winning friends is not that expensive after all. anyone of us can just simply flash a smile without having lost anything but instead, winning so much even more...a friend.
all of us are looking for that one true friend whom we can count on through thick and thin. this is the kind of friend whom we can easily relate with. she/he can talk to me about anything that comes to her/his mind as i can be as comfortable with him/her also. this is one friendship that everyone is hoping to be able to develop with at least one person in this world.

Yes, a 'smile' on our face can do wonders, when we meet strangers or known to people, our 'smile' give them a positive and sound message. They feel that they can approach us and we are welcoming them. It is also said - 'Smile costs you nothing, but it pays a lot". I try to 'smile' as much as possible, I know that it will create a positive and healthy impact on others. I also believe that I should make 'smile' others through my efforts and this is the 'catch line' on my profile here. Moreover, I have choosen a 'smiling baby face' as my avatar, which conveys a lot to my dear friends here.

I wish to make every one smile through my efforts I checked that in your profile and sure you put a smile on my face, Friends will come into us naturally if we start flashing our smiles but don't smile to yourself or else you will be mistaken for insanity. We can start making friends without saying a word but with a smile it say a thousand words. I think that is in you dpk, an ever smiling man as in your avatar, great I can visualize you are an impressive guy, are you not?

I believe you. As a teacher you know best. When I first enrolled my son in school his teacher said he is a smart boy by the look of his eyes and it turns out true as he completed his studies without problems. He is now a successful geo-phycist. A smile is inter-connected with the eyes. When you smile the eyes also glitter that shows it correspond with the smile in the lips.

Yes, it's really true. I remember I met my best friend through a smile.. I was still new in our church then and when I saw her, I just gave her a smile and we had a little chit-chat until we became best of friends until now...

It takes you reading something for you to know the power of a smile. I know the power of a smile since I was 6 years old. It takes 7 muscles in your face to smile and 42 to frown. Smiling is a language and persons tends to join towards it. I am glad that you are practising it now and I wish you all the best on your new mission. Also remember that a person can smile at you and in that smile he/she is telling you not to come closer.
Smiling is a Language and you will need to know all the difference gestures that comes into a smile. I don't want to hear that you were being burnt because of a misunderstanding of a smile.
Merry Christmas and A Prosperous New Year

Yes, I was not told about the effectiveness of smile not until I know how to read. I salute you for being knowledgeable on this subject and your information about the component of muscles that make up a smile and a frown is most welcomed. No, I think I have set my boundary how and when to smile but with a smile we can create more friends. Yet the rules for making friends are so simple that they can be put into four words: Forget yourself. Remember others.

The smile you give begets smiles in return. It is something you give for free but could speak a lot about you. So, I make it a point to smile a lot! Smiling is contagious so I want it to start with me. When I feel lonely and alone the only way for me to overcome is to smile. It is very plain and simple....Smile and the world will smile at you. A smiley face has many friends!

I, too have used a simple smile, not necessarily to make friends but to get through some difficult moment. Sometimes we have to do business with people who are known for making life difficult. And sometimes we have to talk to people who have been dealing with unpleasant situations or rude people all day long. I have found that if I put a smile on my face before I meet this person it will go a long way to soften their mood. At the very least it makes me more tolerant of what they have been through before they get to me.

i agree with you, zandi, that a smile begets another smile. this can lead to deep friendships, the kind which we hope to last a lifetime. i used to believe that i have three treasures of this kind. now, it appears that i have only one true friend left. we used to be friends way back from high school days. we were classmates in an all girl high school. until the days when we had our husbands and children we all stay really close thus, we still know what is happening with each one of us.
sorry it may sound, but i have lost one friend to the grind of life. she and her hhusband broke up and she got lost to us - no way to find her as she went somewhere no one among us can track.
another friend, i have lost to politics. she got so busy getting supportive of her husband's political career such that she can no longer be spending some time with us.
now, that leaves me with one true friend. until now, our families are so closely knit. we might just as well be as close as real life sisters. that for me, is one good gift of life.

Nice to read your association with your friends and hope the remaining one stay true to you. Friendship is one of the few things in the world which you can make. You make friends. You may have to count every cents or penny, yet be rich in friends. You may live in only one room, yet it may be a palace of friends. I can't imagine what would my life be without friends, true friends are more like a family to us.

truly a single smile can make a difference in this crazy world...but i also proved to myself that not everyone are willing to pay another smile back...but the feeling of smiling to others and receiving it back is priceless..it creates a happiness that you wouldn't even know where it came from..i had always practice smiling at others specially those who lives in streets that they do not seem to get a happy face all the time, as we know not all can accept who they are and not all can see them as a human being like all of us...so i pay smile to them and sometimes even say hi..smiles can give everything..for me its priceless and it can fill something that's missing for a while

exactly smile see no boundary even to the people living in streets. These people might never understand what is the meaning of a smiling face. Their faces have stiffen and caked up not having smiled for most parts of their lives. Giving them a smile makes them welcomed and might lift their spirit for a moment.

This is a beautiful discussion . So many times we are met with frowns . I do try to send out smiles when I can , you never know when that smile is the only one a person sees that day. Also , some one was joking with me one day , he said start smiling more, I grumbled and kept on pouting. He was like , look , what if this is you last day on earth , do you want to go out being remembered as the sad girl ? It made me smile and I think small acts of being nice to others goes a very long way.

I agree 100 percent.
And you know, when one leaves a place for so long, and one loses contact with friends for so long, then comes back a little older, but not necessarily wiser, with gray hair on one's head or with nothing at all, wrinkles like roadmaps on the face, a little thinner or stouter than when one left eons ago, all that one's friends may remember is the smile, your smile.
My smile is my ID with friends I have not met for so long. Friends look at the way my eyes crinkle when I smile, then they remember and know it's me.

your response make me roll into laughter. I really can't imagine how my smile would be like when my face are wrinkled like roadmaps on the face. when you were younger the smile were more profound and now with all the wrinkles the smile would be something else but as you said it is the smile that becomes a trademark of a person. I don't know whether it will be the same sweet smile years ago. I better take many snapshots of my smiling face now before it is being rundown by the passage of time.

I totally agree with you... Smiles makes someone looks beautiful...It has a miracle it itself. When you smile to a stanger whose heart for all you know was down, you lightened the sorrow of such heart and it becomes like a medicine...Smile is something you can always afford to give but so expensive in its meaning. When you give your smile especially to strangers, you loose nothing but you gain something.
