Verstaan iemand wat hier geskryf is?

I am not from South Africa but I am fascinated by languages. I know a little Dutch and some German, so it didn't take me long to work out. 'Verstaan' is really the same word as English 'under-stand'; 'wat' and 'hier' are exactly 'what' and 'here', except they are spelt differently in different Germanic languages; I know that 'skrijven' (in Dutch) and 'schreiben' (in German) are 'to write' (from the Latin 'scribere', which gives us the English 'inscribe') and Old English used to form some past participles with 'ge-', so 'geskryf' is 'written'. The only word I had to rack my brains for was 'iemand' but a long time ago we used to sing a song called 'Everyone Loves a Saturday Night' which had words in various languages. I remembered that 'jederman' was either Dutch or German for 'everyone' so I guessed that 'iemand' was 'anyone'. I used to work in a second-hand bookstore and so it was necessary, sometimes, to be able to know what language a book was written in and, perhaps, make a reasonable guess at what it was about (but we let the customers do most of the reading, LOL).
