Friends in our Hindu tradition, there are auspicious times for every thing, like a particular period in the day is a good time, where one can do good things like marriages, or to do pooja to god etc. At the same time there is the bad time, which is known as "Rahu Kalam", where anything you do fails. Friends even though I do not want to believe in this, whenever I start to do anything, in this time,it fails. I do not know whether it is coincidence, but of late I have started to avoid doing anything in this time. Have you encountered this kind of thing in your life ? I would like to know about your experiences.

It is the fundamenatal principle of astrology that our lives are regulated by the planets, and the Sun. In astrology, The Sun[which is a star as per astronomy, like the other 27-stars[some of which are Binary Stars like Ashvini for nstance, some of them are constellations too...] is treated on par with other planets. Each of these is identified with some aspect of our personality and some aspect of the area of Life[called "houses"]. The sum total of one's 'sins'[read:Prarabdha] are indicated by Rahu(the Serpent's Head) and Ketu(the Serpents tail). Just as they have their influences on the personality, they also have their influence on the actions and the fruits of actions, being subject to "Time".
Since Rahu is a "papa-graha"[planet whose position typifies one's sum total of negative or disabling karmas, when Rahu is "ruling" i.e. powerful as given by the Rahukalam Table is inopportune time for doing any good. But one could worhip Devi-parashakti during Rahu-kalam and this kind of worship is considered redemptive. In fact, such pujas are prescribed for people to mitigate the bad placement of Rahu in the Natal or progressive horoscopes.
As averred by SRGanesh, for those horoscopes in which Rahu is favorably placed, like Saturn too for instance, this may not be a debility. But such a person must also guard against, the power being misused to genrate more negative karma for his future. Power corrupts you see!
Yes I have seen the ill-effects of RK. But, there are situations in which I was forced to act, due to exigencies, and the results haven't been bad.

Thanks for the response Gadhisunu, regarding worship of Devi, my mother used to do archana for Durgai Amman on tuesday during rahukalams, that should be one of the reasons that some things which I have started in Tuesdays always ended well. My problems is on sundays, where anything I do on that day during rahukalam, it invariably ends in disaster.

Thank you Ramesh, there is lot more to it than meets the eye.At the same time giving too much of importance to it also puts us in a spot. We must also believe in puruSha-prayatna i.e. human effort.

Thanks for the response ujjwalbatra, when I was your age I also did not believe in such things, but when you grow older and when responsobilities come and when we start having bad luck, we start to believe in all kinds of superstitions. One thing I like to mention is Panchang is a great book, and if everybody starts and follows the Panchang, the troubles will be much lessened.

Yes, I have this same problem but my period is called "Shani" which is for 7 1/2 years. Which makes me lazy and it also hampers my luck too. Everything I do, it automatically turns out to be wrong. Which really makes me angry and helpless. Hope that there is some solution to this period.
Hope to read your reply soon.
Thanks
Bye....

Thanks for the response ngty69, we are sailing in the same boat, and I am also having the 7 1/2years "Shani" and I am in the first 2 1/2 year cycle. But do not worry, even though Lord Shani might give you trouble, he is a god, who can be easily pleased, so just go to Lord Shani's temple on saturdays and pray and your burdens will be lessened, also pray at the Navagrahas on Saturdays and try to light a ghee lamp. The best part is after the end after 7 1/2 years, you will be in a good position and you will be earning at least double the amount of what you are earning today. This is a fact which I have seen with my own eyes. If you want any more information, I shall be glad to give you. Best of luck.

I'm not superstitious so I don't believe good or bad happens because of omens or the placement of the stars or any other such thing. I think people who are superstitious unwittingly cause these things to happen to them.

But this 'rahu kalam' is not for all, reporting worse. There are people who can carry on thngs in that time too who have their rahu well placed in a favourite place in their horoscope. Moreover if the 'dasa' and 'thisa' are good for you, then you wont fail. So,you better consult a horoscope analyser and know the strength of your planets and get along doing things in a particular day which will be a favourite day.For instance,if your mars is strong you can start things on tuesdays.Have a good day!

Thanks for the response srganesh, this is really news to me. I did not know about this dasa and thisa, I will definitely check up and get back to you on this. Regarding tuesdays, even though I consider it as inauspicious, some things which were started on that day, ended well for me.

I do not know much of this tradition you are talking about.
I feel that all time is auspicious.
Marriage, in my opinion, should not be there.
Is there an auspicious time to pray to God? Surely , God is beyond time.
I alwys live as happily as possible . I am not sad. I do not bother bout this or that time.
As for superstition, I think it is there in all religions. The intensity may differ.

many times I do feel that some time is good and some is bad. I have experienced it myself too. many a times everything goes great but sometimes, that bad time comes where everything goes wrong rather opposite.
I hate it when such things happen, I mean if any of my work is sure to be done ,some problems occurs and the work remain in complete.

Hi rameshkumaar, All traditions have their superstitions but I find most people don't belief it anymore. I remember hearing at one time that you should never start a new venture on a Friday, as it would be sure to fail. That is just one but as I said before most people no longer believe such things. Blessings.

Thanks for your response Pose123, but unfortunately in my case, even though I do not want to believe in superstitions, something bad happens, whenever I do any important work during the inauspicious time, particularly on a sunday. So I am in a catch22 situation.

Yes, there are certain good times and bad times according to vedic astrology. One really needs to consult an expert vedic astrologer to find out. For any specific event or in daily life, I always chant Lord Ganesha's name before starting any project. Jai Shree Ganesh!

The Hindu Calender is called the 'Panchanga' and it is a vital part of the lives of the Hindus, because it is indispensable while calculating the dates for festivals and other rituals like marriage, Grihapravesh( Housewarming ceremony)etc;and it is based on the movement of moon and the sun.A lot of thought goes into formating these calendars, so one cannot say that it has no truth. It is part of the Hindu tradition to refer to Panchanga when one is planning any kind of ceremony or function, even if it is not religious.
I have always felt safer to do this because it saves a lot of explaining with the guests asking you whether you have got the time right, and, many guests refer to the calendar and are already aware of the auspicious time, so it is better to stick to a tradition!

Thanks for the response Kiran8, I am very happy to note that lot of people still refer the Panchangam, in fact in the Tamil Brahmins community it is considered as a divine object and on the Tamil New years day, a pooja is done and then only it is used. There is also a way on how it is to be kept in the house, the Panchangam has to be hung like a cloth on clothes line. There are so many good things in our Hindu religion, unfortunately people are forgeting them now days.As you rightly mentioned preparing a Panchangam is not a easy joke and it takes at least one year to prepare the right Pachangam, i.e. for the year 2009 the work starts from 2008 itself.
