Strictly speaking, a virus is a piece of executable code that can copy itself and infect other programs in a computer. It needs a host, that is to say an executable file which is likely to be something that is a normal and legitimate part of an application or the operating system, and it can normally only be transmitted by transferring the infected host file to another computer.

A trojan (short for 'trojan horse') is a particular kind of malware (which may be a virus or a worm) which appears to do something desirable or useful but also does something damaging without the user's knowledge.
The above article also discusses trojans, worms and other types of malware and adware and you can read more about trojans here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trojan_horse_(computing)

A Trojan pretends to be helpful, but isn't. That's what he meant - like, say, an animation that's funny, but behind the scenes it's installing a virus or deleting stuff. Like the Trojan horse: supposedly a gift from the Gods but actually full of invading Greeks!
An additional URL for you: http://www.webopedia.com/DidYouKnow/Internet/2004/virus.asp
That one discusses the difference between a virus, a worm and a Trojan.

I have had virus and been able to remov them quickly and easily, but when I got a trojan, nothing I did would remove it. My computer eventually crashed, the screen turned black and I got a message: "someone else is taking over your computer." It was very spooky. Since that, I got Norton Anti-virus to protect my computer and have no kind of problem.

based on my experience... trojan is a lot damaging than any kind of virus and the most common type... what a small creation pretender!! i hate people who created this one.. i think trojan is also classified as virus.. its like a virus is a general term while the trojan is a more specific one...
