Do you give to beggars, why or why not?

In third world countries, beggars are a common site. Some of them are strong enough to make a living. There are children but you know that their parents are just around the corner allowing their children to look miserable so they could beg. Knowing this, would you willingly give to a beggar? Sometimes it is difficult to determine whether a beggar genuinely needs your help or not. What method do you employ to discern this and do you usually give or not? Why or why not?

I usually don't give money to beggars especially those who are scattered on the street and don't mind running down with the traffic in order to knock on car windows and beg. I really hate the sight of this especially seeing the parents allowing their children to make it as a living. There are other options that we could do to help these people rather than giving them money which would only insinuate them to continue what they're doing because they know somebody would always feel pity for them. Thus, the parents won't be forced enough to take the responsibility and work hard while doing an honest job so as to feed his struggling family. There are charities and other nGO's that we could call for to help these kind of people which are more able to provide better judgment and solution to their needs. I also believe that our government is the most important element that should be able to provide the necessary action towards the problem of increasing beggars on street due to unresolved poverty. The leaders must be able to address the root of the problem and lay out a good plan that would help the marginalized sector of the society. Onthe one hand, as a Catholic, it is also our mission and responsibility to help those who are in need though giving money is not an option to them, we can provide them food or clothings, or education and other resources of living that could help them better in a long-term way.

This is a very comprehensive and well thought of comment. Indeed, I agree with your ideas on all counts. If everyone would chip in perhaps we could do it. But the government must impose rules and follow them through. More NGO's should participate. Thanks for that significant comment. Happy holidays.

I do give to beggars. I do not judge them. I figure if they beg, they want money for something. If I have to lend, I give it. I have given my last dollar to beggars before. I feel it is only right to help out someone else. It is not my place to judge if they need it or not. But if I have the ability I do so. My religion teaches me to help my brethen and not pass judgement on them for doing so. It is my place to help, not judge them. You should do the same. You will feel alot better for helping.

You have rightly pointed out - some of them have actually opted for it as a profession. Particularly on the days of big occasion, they really earn good. Their income may be as high as $50 - $75 a day during those days. A beggar with bank account and amazing balance was recently reported in a newspaper. Beggars are, nowadays, rather organized. So, when you donate money, you may also be indulging in a bad social practice. But there are situation when I a get sympathetic, particularly, looking at the faces of innocent kids. It is rather difficult to remain indifferent. So, these are the situations when I pay few cents to them. Although I know, that kid may be a part of organized beggars team, yet I just can't help. At least I know there is no problem with that kid. There is a problem with the society we live in.

That's a precise obersvation Nilz, indeed, I know of someone who had sent his child to an expensive exclusive school just from his income in blogging. Isn't that amazing? You're right that they could earn as much as that especially if they are diligent and industrious. They've made it a source of income...lol... Thanks for that vital input. Happy holidays.

I do not entertain beggars because I know that even if I do not entertain them or give them some money, there are many noble souls who will do them the favour and in the process, they will get plenty of money or things, which they want.

As you can see, I'm from India and I hate this menace of beggars. I never give them anything. One should do some hard work instead of begging. We should discourage these parasites.

I don't give money to beggars, sometimes beggars are managed by syndicates in our country. If I see kids begging and I happen to have some food with me, I usually give them food instead. If there are kids selling stuffs like rags or sampaguitas, my husband would buy from them. At least they are not begging.

Honestly, it breaks my heart if anyone has to beg, regardless if they could work or not. There is atleast some sort of mental condition there to rather beg from strangers, swallowing dignity, than just make the income yourself. Whenever I am approached, I give them something. I feel horrible if I am not able to. It is not like I give them everything on my being, but even when I have been my most poor, we gave something. There has been times where we didnt have money, but the person was needing food and actually looked hungry as well, we would invite them to our work where we could get them something nice to eat. I know people say that they are scammers or lazy, but the people I have seen do not appear that way. I feel ashamed whenever I see someone going without. Even if I am as well. I would rather people ask for assistance than just steal it.

I have given to beggars but I don't make a habit of it. Most of the beggars I see now are at traffic lights hoping to get you when the light turns red. I have yet to see one who wasn't able bodied. It's quite apparent they could get a job, they just choose not to, which means they are not contributing to our economy. They use the social services we pay for with our taxes and then expect us to give them our hard earned money but do nothing for it but stand on a corner. No, I do not give to these people and I don't feel sorry for them even if their sign says "out of work need help". Out of work? It should say "never worked and don't intend to as long as I can get you suckers to pay by way".

In our city, there are many baggars who are young and strong enough to make a living. My mom told me that I should not help the young baggars ,for they can make a living by themselves. If a old man or women asks you for money ,just give a them something you are in charge of.We cannot help them thoughly, the only thing which can save them is to give up bagging. If this world is full of competers,i think the baggars is the failure.

beggars are a common site in my country. You can find them in streets, markets ,temples & all around. I donate to beggars. But i choose the people,i give it to someone who really needs it. I wont't mind donating someone who is crippled for life or some lady with a baby or someone very old to work to earn. But its not the people that i choose who have choosen begging as their profession. I have seen many people who can work for their living taking the easy way out of begging. Such person should be dissuaded for their act & should be motivated to earn their living by themselves.

NO, I usually don't give to beggars. I don't know if they really need help or not, and in my country baggar become someone's occupation, who in fact is richer that most of us. I hate cheat, most beggars are cheats, why I should give to them? If they really need help, they can go to the relief station which is the public welfare and can give necessary help to vagrants. I once gived to a beggar when I was young, he accepted my money, said thanks, turned back ,and had a smoke happily. What would I say? I was cheated. So, I would never give to beggars. The child is ignorant. If someone use children to make money, isn't that illegal? I have said I won't give to any beggar, no matter child or adult. I think the government should carry these children to children's welfare institute. No matter if their parents exit, they have no ability to foster their children. And do you really believe that the adults around the corner are really the parents of the children? As I know, they are not, if the children begged nothing or too little, the parents would blame them and ask them to beg again. Do the really parents do this?

I have seen beggars here in the UK that seem to be wearing expensive trainers and it makes me wonder at times if they are better off than those of us who work. I have given money to beggars in the past and I could really see that they were fallen on hard times, but nowadays I have to wonder. I mean they could have been given their expensive clothes by a charity, so perhaps it's best not for me to judge, as I may not have the full story :-) Derek

It does depend I guess. If there are children involved I would probably weaken and just give. It is a shame that there are some that have the ability to change their situation but won't be bothered doing it. Having said that I would like to think that anyone begging genuinely needs the help because of circumstances beyond their control and I would feel good lending a hand even if is in the form of a couple of dollars.

It really depends. If the beggars were little or old. who looks like have not the ability to get a job, I would give some. But if they looks healthy and have the ability to do some thing instead of begging, I will not give them any cents, I despise this kind of person. And you know, there are many professional beggars now. They make living by begging and even have the better like after getting off work then us. They deceived the kind people by their poor outside. I despise that kind of behavior.
