Well here in Minnesoita we have been having artic like temperatures of near -20F at night. For a few days now we have been lucky to get to zero even. Add the high winds and the temps feel like _25 to -40F as well. Been having problems with my snowblower seizing up. Well I asked my wifes boss and he gave me a suggestion. That did not work really so I kept it inside my house in the dining room. After it warmed up it started right away. My garage is unheated and uninsulated as well so it is icy feling insode there as well and the snowblower can't handle it. So I guess for this winter when it's really cold I keep this baby inside to keep it warm so I don't have to use a shovel. Is your garage heated and or insulated at all? Would a small propane heater turned out a few moinutes insoide the garage next to it help warm it up to start when it's well below zero? BCMike, I found out mine is just 4.5 HP.

Just out of curiosity Grandpa Bob, can you describe what -20 feels like? As a Miami native the coldest I ever felt was 25 once on a trip to NYC and that was enough to make me cry. I'm just curious to know if you can even step outside in that kind of cold.

It's horrible! You have to make sure your ears are covered and it's really important to put a scarf around your neck and over your mouth. It helps to keep warmer if you're not breathing the cold air, but warmer air through the scarf. Your nostrils freeze. Gloves don't really help keep your fingers warm, unless you have 2 pairs on or those little heater packets tucked away in them (and in your boots). You have to be careful that your exposed parts - nose, ears - don't get frostbitten, because that can plague you forever.... I saw a man on TV the other day whose nose tip had been removed because of frostbite a few years back.

We have been having very cold days with snow here lately too. Right now it's 2 degrees and yesterday it was -6 with a wind chill of -30. We are also going to get more snow tonight. Our garage is insulated and we have a garage heater, but we only turn it on when were going to be in there for a long period of time. My husband hasn't had any trouble getting the snow blower started. Good luck with yours.

It is a ablamy -2F right now with a windchill of -20F. So it's warmed up a little. But with this snowstorm approaching theres warm air as well. Going to be near or in the 20's the rest of the week and slightly below zero at night. One or two nights about -10F at night otherwise fairly nice compared to the rest of the month so far.

Guess Like everything else it just needs some warmth to get it going and keeping it inside will do it..don't have the snow but do have the brr cold of freezing weather in the 30's today and the winds don't help..like the cold, but not freezing..

GrandpaBob, I don't have to deal with neither one of those problems. We don't get snow it is an unusual site here in this area. I don't have a snow blower or a garage.
But I can say when we do have wintry weather like that it is freezing rain, snow flurries and icy conditions. The problem is we just slip and slide all over the place so everything here is shut down and closed because we can not handle it. When this happens I refuse to slide out of my driveway.

I need my snow and cold this time of the year. It doesn't seem right if it's warm etc. I really hate when it's frigid outside and no snow on the ground. Just doesn't seem right to me. I love my snow and cold to a point.

H U H ?
What the heck does this statement have to do with keeping my snowblower indoors and questions about a propane heater? Did you even take the time to read the discussion at all? I think not but I will take that you have possibly.
Hmmmm odd response to say the least. Thanks for your little time spent
here and thanks also for the few words from you.

It is very cold. Temperatures outside are very cold. We have the stove opened. We also use Biotech heaters. They help the house keep cold. It's also good to use an electric blanket OR you can keep your winter jacket on, right? Have a nice day, happy postings on mylot!

Hi GRANDPA BOB,
I don't know how you cope with that cold and snow, I don't think I can cope, we don't have any garage and it don't get so cold like that here, so enjoy all your snow for it won't last long, its such a shame really, but still you will have white christmas.

No garage in Minnsota is not even a thoiugh for most of us.
I hate having to clear the car of snow and ice more so than clearing the driveway.
Layers of warm clothes is the trick. Most days I don't even feel the cold except on my cheeks (face) when the snow blows back onto my face. No biggie so far here for me with the cold.

We couldn't get our snowblower to work either grandpa bob.
We don't have a heated garage and no it is not insulated which really doesn't help much.
I never thought about trying to use a heater in the garage but its a good suggestion.
But we are at least lucky we have a good neighbour with a plow on his truck who sometimes comes over when we are in a real crunch and removes the snow for us.
Happy Holidays Grandpa Bob!

eah a smallpropane heater turned on and aimed at the engine for 5 or 10 minutes I think would suffice in an unheated garage. Just what I think but I have no idea. A 20 gallon tank has about 30 hours worth of fuel for this purpose so it would last all year easily. I can use the tank from my BBQ as well for the heater.

We've had a few of those nights in Cincinnati as well. Don't think we had any below zero (real or wind chill) temperatures last year. My poor son - who spent most of his life in FL and TX - had never had his nostrils freeze before.
Our garage is not protected at all, and my son's room is right above it. Makes for a pretty cold floor for him. Perhaps putting a small heater in there wouldn't be a bad idea, at least for part of the day.
