SO it is that time of the year again and the gift buying has started. While browsing for gift ideas, I saw this list of gifts that you should never give anyone, do you agree? If so why? If not, why not? Also feel free to add your own to the list 1. Theme gifts (more than 2x) 2. A holiday sweater 3. A gym membership 4. A subscription to a magazine you don't know that they read 5. Your old pots and pans (your old anything) 6. A stuffed animal to anyone over the age of 8 7. An I.O.U. for the gift you plan to give 8. A dusty tin full of edible stuff

I honestly have never heard about IOU's and still can't understand the concept when it comes to gift giving.

I think it all depends on the person, as I pointed out in my own post. Everyone has different tastes, and what seems awkward or tacky to you, may actually be appreciated by someone else.

oh I don't know about the stuffed toy a lot of adults like them especially if it is a fluffy toy from a special man in your life, i have a few that i treasure, and the IOU can be a good thing like IOU a nights baby sitting, or garden clean up or something useful for the future but of course it must be fulfilled not just promised...

My hubby gives me stuffed animals sometimes, and I like them. But I've told him to stop because the kids always steal them from me. I gave him a stuffed bear once too, and I still get my 11 year old stuffed animals now and then, just for the heck of it.

Here's a really good NEVER!!!! Never give the person (particularly your Mom)you're staying with (free of charge) two bags of M & M's, a Starbucks mug that you bragged about getting for $2.99-filled with tea that your host or hostess has given you,and a tin of stale cheap butter cookies; when you have spent hundreds of dollars on your children, mother in law, husband, uncle in law and yourself. I design and make artist teddy bears and I sell a lot of them at Christmas time. I haven't had an unsatisfied recipient! I always attach a tag with my address and telephone number and not one bear has ever been returned. I love getting artist teddy bears and other artist animals for holidays. (I am currently looking for a wonderful miniature titled "Snot". He's super and hard to find! I love subscriptions to the magazines I enjoy, it is a year long gift that reminds me that the person who gave the gift cares tons about me.

When I was a teenager I remember my Mom telling me about the first Christmas that she and my father spent as newly weds. He went out and bought an EXPENSIVE tool box for himself for Christmas but the tag on it said the gift was for my Mom. He informed her that she was to never touch the tool chest or the tools. (Great gift huh? I would have dumped him within 30 seconds after being informed that the tools and chest were my gift) That stuck with me and when my father's birthday came around I decided to get even. Mom stated that there was a movie that she really wanted to see, and my father would never had taken her to it, so I went to the theater and bought two advanced tickets and, you guessed it, gave them to my father for his birthday. He opened the card and found the tickets and the look on his face was priceless! He looked like he had sucked on a whole lemon grove!!! He took my Mom to the movie, and Mom popped for a ticket for me. I didn't like the movie, but I loved it because I was able to get back at father for being such a louse! Oh, that gift I mentioned before, was MY Christmas gift from my daughter. I forgot to add that she had also bought me a bunch of Sees suckers (I think there were 12). I think her husband had a lot to do with the cheap gifts...but even so, for the 20 or 25 bucks they spent they could have bought me a used dryer or something that I could have really used.

Yep... I do agree with all that's in your list. Because I myself would be not so happy to received it byut I would be very thankful enough to the one who would give it to me. But the truth is... its hard to shop for gifts, specially if we have no idea what the person we want to give the gift to likes and dislikes. As for me I still have rush gift buying because I dont know what to buy then when I still have all the time in the world.

I agree...everytime I have to shop for gifts it is a task because sometimes it may seems as though that person has everything that they need and you ask yourself what more can I give them that they don't have and sometimes draw a blank.

lol yeah I wouldn't give any of those as gifts.Especially old stuff of mine and holiday sweaters because most people won't wear that any other day than the day you give it to them. A gym membership could be offensive as well. For me I've been the most successful with giving the candles from my candle business as gifts. Most people like scented candles even men.Oh and definitely no I.o.u's unless its some kind of gift certificate.

Indeed, a lot of peopel really do liek candles especially the scented ones and also those that are of varying shapes. I like the ones they have in the shape of fruits

I don't really know what a theme gift is either. If it is holiday decorations, I agree not to give them. I get them all the time for my birthday which is in November and can't stand them! Holiday sweaters are nice if you give them to someone who likes them. I know my mom loves them. I don't buy them for her because she has so many, but she always loves getting them. I'd love a gym membership. I'd say if you know someone who wants one than go for it. Magazines I agree with you. Unless someone specifically asks for one. Anything old is tacky! I have a nephew who is 10 and all he asked for were webkins~ a little weird to me,but to each his own. I've gotten an IOU as a gift and am still waiting for the gift. Anything dusty is gross.

I have heard about those webkins and only now seeing them, just fluffy animals that kids seems to love collecting, so I guess everyone likes something someone else may not.

I agree with you. Even so if I have to buy something the person has to eat, I would probably buy chocolates or a gourmet or food basket

Although this list can be accurate, I also think that there's a lot of big kids (adults) who still getting a stuffed animal, adults who enjoy popcorn tins (ya there's loads of them at the holiday's).. in fact, the only thing I do agree with on the list is an I.O.U., that is a horrible thing... might as well just tell them "Hey, we can exchange after Christmas, okay?"

I don't know what you mean by Themed Gifts, but I think those can be nice. My hubby gets a Scooby something every holiday, usually undies or jammy pants. He enjoys it. A holiday sweater... well some people could enjoy that. I personally wish I had at least 1 holiday top, a nice one, not something tacky. A gym membership... again, some people would appreciate that. Not me per say, but some might. A subscription to a magazine... well if you know the person well enough and know their interests, for instance my boys love cars, so a subscription to a car magazine would be perfect. Your old pots and pans or anything... this I suppose I must agree with, although we have given my oldest son our old video game systems as gifts. He enjoys that. Stuffed animals... well that was covered by the 1st post, stuffed animals can be good gifts An I.O.U. that depends on what it's for. When I was a kid I recieved an IOU for a nintendo my mother couldn't afford to buy right away, that sort of sucked. But this year my best friend gave me an IOU to a water park this summer... that's a good gift! A dusty tin of edible stuff... wipe off the dust and send it over! I love edible stuff, so long as the edible stuff isn't dusty! What I think is a bad gift is a picture of yourself. That's just arrogant and cocky if you ask me. Unless you're a little kid, you don't give people pics of yourself, unless it's a group photo of your whole family. Gift cards and money are also bad gifts in my opinion. They're too impersonal. Although I do get them for teachers etc, I'd rather give someone a gift from the heart, whether they like it or not. I don't like giving gift cards to friends and family.

gt, Do people really need a list to go by, not to give anyone of these? Your old pots and pans? Now that is just plain rediculous, and pathetic!! A gym membership is an oldie, isn't it? I once received an IOU from one of my nephews, knowing that he just forgot to get the gift. He actually followed through with it. leenie

I disagree with the stuffed animal idea. I love getting them. I once set one to an online friend...and we've now been married for almost 5 years. I think that list is mostly intended for people who have to give gifts to people they really don't know very well. Even people considered 'hard to buy for' are not that bad if you take the time throughout the year to watch and listen to them. You know how in March you get a great gift idea...but come the Holidays or their birthday, you can't remember it? Write it down! I keep a list of ideas on my computer for each person. Come gift giving time, it comes in handy! About the only thing I would add to the list is a fruitcake. I HATE those, although some people like them. Do you remember Chia Pets? I love those, since my cats enjoy the green to eat.

WOW! Congrats on your marriage...I like how you think, that's what I am going to do from now when I have a great gift idea. I think maybe it is the holiday stress that makes oyu forget just what you were thinking to buy for a person.

I think the best gift they would appreciate is a personalized item. ;)

So true! Most people like seeing their names on gift items that they can treasure for a long time to come
