As we read in the media that the conservatives don't care about the poor. They are all about helping the rich. There is an interesting column in the New York Times about personal giving.

It seems that Conservatives give more than liberals. Liberals who are portrayed as caring people they are caring with other peoples money. Some might say that Conservatives give to Churches, which is true but churches work with the poor. Liberals tend to give to non profits like the Arts, Music and other forms of selected entertainment.
In the last election both Senators Obama and Biden talked about helping the poor but Gov Plain gave more that either man to charity, yet her combined income was less than either man. Yet the media continues to claim that the liberals care more about the poor. hey may but it is with other peoples money not their own.

I reads as if you are making a political statement without coming right out being totally forthcoming so I am not exactly sure where you are going with your point of view. I, on the otherhand, have observed that no matter who is in the first chair the people of this country fund the government. Speaking only for myself, I proper more when the this out-going party is not in house. Everyone gives in their own way and that is totally their call. If they are voted in our beds have been made and we must lie in them for the duration. If luck is with us, all will be well; if not, then we must endure to the end and then try again. It is a bit unrealistic to expect one man, one administration, or even one nation to be the champion for the poor; that task begins with each individual. It is up to the individual to act, providing one act of kindness at a time.
I grew up in a very poor community but no one ever starved there. Welfare and other public assistance was uncommon. Our community helped each other regardless of who was at the helm of this great land. We ate at each other's tables, worked each other's fields and cared for one another's children. We shared our clothing, money, homes and time. We took care of the sick and shut-in and assisted the weak. We were a community of many races, creeds, colors, nationalities; we had the poorest of poor and the middle class and even a few that were well off. No one was ever forgotten or ignored, there was never inflamatory language on subjects regarding the poor or any administration. We just put our shoulders to the wheel and pushed along as individuals and helped whomever needed our help. If we could not provide what was needed, we recruited other members of the community to help. No one ever went without unless it was their choice for our community was always at the ready to help anyone in need.
I feel a bigger question is: "Will we care for the poor?" The climate in Washington is reflective of the people of this nation so where should we point the finger when it comes to those in need? Do we pay tithe and give offerrings to the church? Do we volunteer or provide community service? What are we doing for the poor? What we do, Washington will follow because they need us to stay in power. Upset the people enough and they will work to remove you from office. It is time to become more retro in our perspective and take upon us the responsibilities that our our own. We will end up paying for any help the poor receives anyway; why not do it personally and with a cheerful heart. There will always be someone who is poor but that just provides us the opportunity to develop true charity.
Sometimes I am better off than others but I always try to help others in anyway that I can. I do it because it is the right thing to do; and to answer your question: I will stand to help the poor because it is my individual responsibility, and I hope you will do the same.

When President Johnson declared the War On Poverty we have spent trillions on poverty programs and still have the same or more people in poverty. What we got for our money was employment for people who come into a community and tell the people who poor they are are how the government should do more. There is something wrong when the government will pay your college costs, give you food and shelter and people still remain in poverty. I had a friend who was a single parent with one child. She took a teaching job and took a cut in benefits to take the job from welfare. She had to fight the system every step of the way to get off the assistance. There was a friend who was trying to do the same thing and when she got a job her social worker offered to get her hours cut so she could remain on the roles. Both were in difficult relationships and needed help for a couple of years to get back on their feet. It was a struggle getting off the assistance. Just look at what President Obama promised 95% of the people a tax cut. Close to 40% of the people he was giving the tax cut to do not pay taxes, but he was going to give them a check. Yes it is very political, they are willing to help the poor with my money but will not help with their money.
