You think that most people prefer to look at profiles that are more customized? Maybe,since most of us express ourselves with layouts,pictures and music. As Stewie from family Guy had said,"I use things that other people created to express my personality!" lol

You will be surprised that not all users like all the fancy and glittery stuffs that some put on their profiles especially if you are no longer in the teenager age group. There are also many people who prefer to visit simple profile page rather than those that are heavily customized. That's why some members move away from Friendster and MySpace to Facebook since they find that Facebook pages are simpler and faster to load compared to those heavily customized pages of some other social networking sites that can sometimes give you headache with all that flashing and spinning stuffs all over the place. I myself would prefer to visit those simple or original profile as they are fast loading and does not hurt my eyes and make me dizzy and I would normally stay longer at these type of pages rather than the customized ones. yes it effects till some extend but then also you need to be socially creative because else there is nothing that can help you.

Visual impression is important for social networking sites to attract people to join. I myself would like to join a social networking media that gives me a good user interface. It can be glittery or just a simple theme. Some sites are too cluttered that it is so difficult to get what you want.

I'm not sure what you are exactly trying to ask. If your question is "Do people prefer social networking sites that allow users to personalize their profile over sites that don't?", I would say it depends on the person. Personally, I like sites that you can't personalize your profile. Because of this, I prefer to use Facebook. I'm in love with facebook. Others like to have a "unique" profile. I believe personalizing profiles are a big waste of time, and many times make profiles load a lot slower. Hope this helps. :)
