are downloading torrents okay?

My friend pointed a site where i can download movies for free! I have been addicted to it for awhile but stopped because i heard that they can track down the users who download movies, music illegally. I was just wondering if these activities are illegal, how come there are so many people uploading and sharing music, movies and programs online?

Technically no because torrent file is only 30-60kb big and you are not downloading that movie/program or whatever in 'one package'.
But by the law yeah it is illegal and you can get caught BUT small chances for that.
I'm not sure if I may say this but if you want to continue downloading torrents this is the safest site - www.thepiratebay.org

and i really love it but already stopped since i heard that they are strict with downloading here in Singapore. I'm not sure if i got my definition of torrent right, because the movies that i get from pirate bay are about 600 to 800 MB.

Yeah I know, because I'm from Europe and I can say that downloading torrents is my hobby :) but currently I reside in the US. Try to download torrent file before you open it with a software and you going to see that the size is like 30-60kb.
But when you open that file with a software it connects with trackers and starts downloading piece by piece.
I understand you are scared because fines are really big for copyrighting.

Yes it's definitely illegal to download movies/music/etc with torrents. Just about anything that you can download "for free" is probably illegal. But most people don't care, because they don't think they will get caught. And that's why there is so much illegal stuff out there, especially music. People just don't care about the laws, and so when they want to watch/listen to something, they download it without another thought!
