What have you done to 'go green?'

What small measures have you taken to do your part in 'going green' to save our planet? Even small changes are beneficial. We have started keeeping a trash bag for junk mail and all paper. We take that to work where there is a dumpster for recycled paper. We are saving our aluminum cans and taking them to a local recycler...not for the money (which isn't too bad) but to do our part in saving the enviorment. We have turned our heat down to 62 while we are gone during the day and 65 when we are home.

we use energy saving light bulbs,
we recycle
we boarded up all the drafts in the window,
we use cloth rather than paper towels,
we take our own bags to the grocery store

Yeah, we have switched all our bulbs for the new energy-saving type. I forgot about that! We bought some bags to take to the grocery rather than having them bag our items in plastic bags, however we are bad to forget to take them to the store or we forget and leave them in the trunk if we do remember to take them on the trip!

My family and I are slowly trying to go as "green" as we can. It's a little costly for some things, at first, but in the long run - they will not only save money but will help save this planet.. hopefully.
We have replaced all of the lights in our house to energy saving lights. Even the light in our refrigerator and our porch lights are energy saving lights now. We have 3 recycle bins provided by the city - which we use. One is for regular trash. One is for all recycle items and one of for all yard clippings etc.
We have a huge trash can that we use to place all aluminum cans inside. We collect them until we have multiple bags full and then we turn them in. We normally get about $50 each time.
We have been making it a habit to turn off lights when we are not in the room. To keep the heater and air conditioner adjusted to sensible levels. We now use our dishwasher and we wait until it is loaded before running it. We also make sure that when we do the laundry, both the washer and dryer are maximized. Over the summer months, we line dry our clothes.
I've been getting into the habit of reusing zip-lock bags. Just wash them and turn inside out to dry. I try to strech the use of anything I can.
One of the biggest things I'm involved in is www.freecycle.org - I am the owner of the group for my city. I volunteer my time to run the group which focuses on recycling useable items. Things that you no longer have a use for but are in perfectly useable condition - we urge people to join our site and give those items away to other people rather than tossing them in the trash. Our group has grown so much over the past year and I love seeing things gifted rather than placed in our landfill. I'm one of those people who hates to drive down the street and see things that are in great condition, sitting out for the trash man. There are so many people in need these days who would love to have a second hand couch, table, clothing.. anything - and instead people are throwing these things in the trash which ends up in our city landfill.
I'm always looking for new ways to cut corners and go a little more "green". I'd like to save this planet for my grandchildren and great-grandchildren, I can!

We have had recyclable boxes for years now and do not get the benefit, no cash in our pockets, we also use the twisty bulbs, and I save the pop cans to help our Church school. But it was not to save the planet, but because we have always been thrifty. As for turning the thermostat down, we did for some time and then both my husband and I got these horrible colds. It was a good thing I got my flu shot or it would have been worse.
So if one is also saving, it is because one is a good manager, and does not waste thing. Saving the planet should not be the reason to do it, because it means you are worshiping mother nature and not God who put man to be a faithful steward of HIS earth.
Oh and those storms in the Eastern United States, if turning down the heat would have done any good, they should not have happened.

Awesome ideas... I water some young plans in the neighbouring park. I love trees. But cows are set free here and so many of them would even enter park and destroy these trees that I have been watering. Wondering what to do with these cows.

Hi my friend I am glad you are back it has been a while it seems you are not been around or is it me how has not notice you.
We have been recycling our bottles and cans for years, my husband collects cans from his work. I know do not buy bottled water we use a Brita water filter even when we went on vacation. I drink a lot of water so we took an ice chest to have ice from the motel, and large insulated cups and the Brita water system. What I did was pack a the picture and a new filter when we got to the motel I put a new filter in the picture. I then had a large plastic container to keep water in the ice chest so we had plenty of water to refill our glasses during the day. It saved on waste and on money.
I keep the heater on 64/65 while at home and off when I am not home. I use the clothes line during the warm days. I turn off my computer and as many lights when not in the room. I put up curtains and covered two vents so we do not heat or cool two rooms we do not use very often.
This is what I do beside recycle all the trash we can. I shred as much as possible and put them in the recycle bin.
Did you know that now California's recycle 58% of there waste and the goal for 2009 was 50% we are going well.

I drive less and watch my gas consumption even though gas prices are pretty low right now. Turn off your lights when not in a room and making sure you have a full laundry basket before washing.

I am saving water in my household which can total up to saving more than 100gallons a year. Did you know that a dripping faucet which drops one water globule per second can result in 2700 gallons loss in a year? Well, i sure didn't and after reading many eco-friendly tips at various sites, i have become a better person.
